The Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning in cooperation with the Countywide Trails and Sidewalks Committee compiled and published the existing trails maps to aid trail users in planning trips for commuting, and recreational purposes. The maps identify existing trails along routes and locations depicted in the Countywide Trails Plan (see below). They also also include existing trails along main collector roads in communities, and along access roads to nearby schools, parks, libraries, shopping centers, religious establishments, transportation stations or stops, and government facilities.
The inventory of trails was completed primarily through staff interpretation of the images of orthophotos, and verification in the field by the members of the Trails and Sidewalks Committee. The inventory warrants continuous field check and updating. Users of the map are encouraged to help to identify any discrepancies or missing information. To report discrepancies, please call the Trail Planner at 703-324-1380. You may also contact the members of the Committee.
Paper copies of the existing trails maps and the adopted Countywide Trails Plan are available from the Publications Center located at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 156, Fairfax, Va. 22035. Hours: 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Phone: (703) 324-2974.
