The Bicycle Commuter Assistance Program

  • The Louis Archer Elementary School PTA announces four Safe Routes to School / Safety seminars in September. Dates are Sept. 10, 18, 20 and 26, starting at 7:00 pm in the Louis Archer Elementary School library, 324 Nutley Street, Vienna, Va. The seminars are open to the public.
  • The American Hiking Society has named the Burke Lake Loop Trail one of the ten best fitness trails in the nation. According to the AHS Web site, "American Hiking's trails specialists picked trails that are in or near a major metropolitan area (meaning they are close so you can use them before or after work or on your lunch hour), have portions that can be completed in 60-90 minutes and in some cases are multi-use. Basically, fitness trails provide a great alternative to going to the gym and staring at the person on the treadmill in front of you."
  • The Fairfax County Transportation Plan is currently being updated. A newsletter is available with the current schedule. The current plan describes many non-motorized transportation objectives and goals for reaching them. An online copy of the policy plan is available in PDF format. Online comments can be made on the plan and the planning process, and a mailing list is available for receiving news about the planning process.
  • The Board of Supervisors established a Pedestrian Task Force, consisting of citizens, appointed commission members, and multi-disciplined staff, to review existing Fairfax County pedestrian programs and activities, make recommendations on improving these programs, develop coordinated education and outreach efforts, and prioritize funding for pedestrian projects. See the Department of Transportation Pedestrian Task Force Web site for more information.
  • Bicycles Belong - Bicyclists can now obtain a specialy license plate from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. See the Bicycle Enthusiast license plate web page for more information.
  • The Bicycle Commuter Assistance Program is an interactive bicycle commuter guide sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association that provides detailed commuter information and maps online. Use it to find the most convenient routes to your destination in the Washington area."
