Between 1999 and 2000 the number of pedestrian fatalities in Fairfax County increased by 38% , from 13 in 1999 to 18 in 2000. The objective of the Safety Subcommittee is to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized transportation users, and to reduce the number of deaths and injuries. The subcommittee is working with government officials to investigate the locations of accidents, identify causes, and attempt to alleviate negative conditions. The committee is focusing on three areas where a large number of accidents occurred in the past 5 years:
- Annandale near the intersection of Little River Turnpike (Route 236), Annandale Rd. and columbia Pike (Route 244), just east of the Beltway.
- Baileys Crossroads, near the intersection of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Columbia Pike (Route 244).
- Richmond Hwy (Route 1) near the intersection with Mount Vernon Hwy (Route 235).
Other areas of concern are located at intersections where multiple accidents occurred at a single location. The two most dangerous intersections in the County, where the most accidents occurred in the past 5 years are:
- Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) and Graham Rd. - Adjacent to the Loehmanns Shopping Center, Tax Map 50-3.
- 16 accidents, including 1 fatality and 1 hit and run.
- Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) and Patrick Henry Dr. - Near Seven Corners, Tax Map 51-3.
