Flexible Work Schedules


A growing number of employers are moving toward alternative work schedules to help employees with work/life balance issues, such as child care. Some of the more common arrangements include:

  • Part-time work schedules
  • Job sharing
  • Compressed work weeks (four or 10-hour days or 80 hours within nine days)
  • Telework and telecommuting which allows an employee to work at home or at a work center closer to their home

Not all work responsibilities can be adapted for flexible work schedules. In addition, employer and employees are finding that clear expectations must be set in order to ensure that the schedules and the work requirements will be successful.
