SACC Turns 30
Look Familiar?

Were you enrolled in SACC in the '80s? If so, these faces might look familiar to you. SACC Regional Supervisor Sharon Brier-Downing started working for SACC in 1981. “SACC offers staff the opportunity to be autonomous, creative and innovative,” she stated. “Parents appreciate the professionalism of our staff.” Olde Creek Center Supervisor Sue Deremer has been with SACC since 1983. “When you have worked at a school for a number of years you almost feel as though you are part of one big extended family,” she explained. “I have been invited to a number of children's high school and college graduations.” “The one thing I hear most often from parents is … I feel a sense of relief that my child is happy and in a safe and caring environment,” commented Beth Byham, the center supervisor at Sleepy Hollow who has worked for SACC since 1984. Hunters Woods Teacher Julia Olson has also been with SACC since 1984. “I have worked with SACC staff that were children in the SACC program,” she stated. “They loved going to SACC and could still name all their teachers. They felt like SACC was a big part of their childhood.” Regional Supervisor Veronica Letsinger, Kilmer Center Supervisor Sandra Mauldin and Union Mill Center Supervisor Patricia Makel all began their SACC careers in 1985. “A SACC child I had at Clermont in 1987 is now a SACC parent who has her child enrolled in the program,” Letsinger recalled. “She remembered me and told the staff that I was her SACC teacher. She felt since it was good for her, she enrolled her child.” According to Mauldin, “What I have enjoyed most about working with SACC is being at Kilmer and working with children who have special needs. I have a favorite who was six years old when I started at Kilmer, and she is now 28. She still visits at least twice a year.” Makel recalled that parents have told her, “SACC is our lifeline.” Rick Hershey is a SACC registrar who was enrolled in SACC back in 1980. “I attended SACC from first grade to sixth grade at numerous sites. I went to everything: before school, after school, winter, spring and summer SACC programs.” Hershey started working part-time for SACC in 1992 while he was still in college. “I still, after all these years, enjoy my work and the people I work with,” he reported. His oldest child is now enrolled in SACC. “[My son] attends SACC and loves it!” Hershey exclaimed. “As a parent I know he is safe and secure. I am confident he is with people who care for him and make sure he is having fun.”
