SACC's 30th Anniversary
1979 marked the launch of the compact disc, the ESPN channel, the first Star Trek movie, the Happy Meal, “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang, the Susan B. Anthony dollar, and the Fairfax County School Age Child Care program. This year commemorates SACC’s 30th anniversary.
SACC began in 1979 with 23 centers and 700 children, 60 of whom had special needs. SACC now serves more than 10,000 children, including more than 1,200 children with special needs, in 136 centers throughout Fairfax County. SACC has become a national-award-winning program that is seen as a model for other child care programs.
“SACC supports our school goals and they offer a safe, stimulating environment for our students,” wrote one principal on a June 2009 survey. Another principal wrote: “SACC is as important to a child’s education, particularly to kindergartners, as school is.”
Although 30 years of experience has honed SACC expertise at offering a fun, fascinating and educational curriculum, it’s the teachers and administrators who are the secret of SACC’s success. A number of them have been with SACC almost since it began.
