Virginia Preschool Initiative

The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) supports quality early childhood education programs for children at risk for school failure. Families with income at, or below 200% of poverty, with children who are four years old by September 30 of the school year and who live in Fairfax County are eligible for participation in VPI. Children are also eligible if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Identified with special needs and have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Live in a foster care home.
  • Are under a Child Protective Service order.
  • Live in families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
  • Live in families that are enrolled in the Virginia Initiative for Employment Not Welfare (VIEW) program.
  • Live with a teen parent.

VPI supports children's school readiness through:

  • Quality early childhood education programs.
  • Health, mental health, dental and developmental screenings and follow-up as needed.
  • Experiences that result in smooth transitions to kindergarten.

Programs partner with families to provide:

  • Workshops and events that engage families in their children's early education experiences.
  • Literacy programs.
  • Resource materials.

Early childhood professionals participating in VPI receive support through:

  • Ongoing professional development.
  • On-site visits and technical assistance.
  • Classroom supplies that support curriculum implementation
