Several species of bats flit in the late summer sky. Look for them from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. at Hidden Oaks Nature Center as we head to our campfire where you learn fun bat facts and lore plus enjoy an American Indian story of how bats got their wings. In the Wild with the Running NaturalistClick to Register with Parktakes Online
If you’re a nature lover and also want to stay in shape, this is the program for you. A naturalist from Hidden Pond Nature Center will take you on a one-hour nature run, making quick stops at scenic locations or for wildlife observations. Group size is limited, so sign up quickly! Runners meet at the Giles Run Meadow parking lot at Laurel Hill Park at 10 a.m. Participants must be at least age 15. The cost is $6 per person. Register online. For information, call 703-451-9588.

Children ages three to five with an accompanying adult take a walk to the wetland at Huntley Meadows Park to look at real-world examples of seasonal happenings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Following the walk there will be activities and a craft. This un-mounted class at Frying Pan Farm Park from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. introduces young children to basic horse care and handling. Four to six-year-olds will touch and pet, lead a horse, and prepare our horse friend’s dinner. Adult must attend class with child. The cost is $8 per child. Register online. This hands-on, un-mounted class for children ages 7 to 10 years offers an overview of horse basics at Frying Pan Farm Park. From 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., groom, lead and exercise a horse. Learn about tack and equipment, and practice horse care and handling. Help with feeding, first aid, and horse care. The cost is $10 per child. Register online. For information, call 703-437-9101.

Workshop: Container Garden for ShadeClick to Register with Parktakes Online
At this Green Spring Gardens workshop from 9:30 to 11 a.m., add beautiful color and texture to your shady garden, patio, or porch with a container that thrives in the shade. Junior/Parent Tournament
Teams of two players compete in an 18-hole scramble format at Burke Lake Golf Course from 8 a.m. to noon. Compete in closest-to-the-pin contests. Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams in two age divisions: Adult/Jr. 7-12 and Adult/Jr. 13-17. Registration begins two weeks prior to event. Space is limited to first 48 teams.
