Habitat Restoration

Join our Invasive Management Area (IMA) program for a free, tree preservation workday at Nottoway Park from 9 a.m. to noon, or at Accotink Creek (Kay Ct.) from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn to identify native and non-native plants. Participants must be at least 15, unless accompanied by an adult. Breakfast With the Birds

Enjoy bagels, donuts, fruit, coffee and juice before observing and listening to spring migrant and resident songbirds on a two-mile, naturalist-led hike at Ellanor C. Assist a naturalist with a reptile survey at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Search for, capture, identify and release snakes. Learn the habits and preferred habitats of our native snakes. Garden Goodness: Cooking With Spring Vegetables

Parents should consider gardening as an alternative to television and video games. In Green Spring Gardens’ “Let’s Grow” program, children learn how to grow vegetables. Learn how to prepare easy, healthy vegetable recipes that entice finicky critics. Create and eat seasonal treats. Workshop: Living Wreaths

Bruce Nash, horticulture instructor at Northern Virginia Community College, creates a unique living wreath using succulents and herbs as inspiration for the class at Green Spring Gardens. Known for their striking forms, unusual colors and easy-care, succulents and herbs are fun plants to combine. Participants create a wreath of their own to take home with them from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Plants, soil and containers are provided. The cost is $50 per person. To register, call 703-642-5173.

Cardboard Boat Orientation and Workshop

At this essential workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, you will meet with former Cardboard Boat Regatta contestants and learn tips from the pros that will maximize your chances of entering a race-worthy vessel in this year’s Cardboard Boat Regatta at Lake Accotink Park. Learn what materials are allowed and not allowed. An orientation to the regatta and what contestants should expect will also be provided. Walk with a Naturalist to the Cross County Trail

Hike woodland trails around Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and traverse the stream through the six-foot culvert under the Beltway to reach the Cross County Trail. Wear shoes that can get wet. Prepare for an easy grade but uneven and slippery surfaces. Reservations are required for this free, all ages walk. Canceled if rain. To reserve, call 703-941-1065.

Birding at South King’s Highway

Adults are invited to search for birds from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at Huntley Meadows Park. This is the height of neo-tropical songbird migration. Bring binoculars and field guides. Green Spring Garden Markets

Local growers will provide you with shrubs, native plants and wildflowers, ornamental grasses and unusual perennials and annuals from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) receive 10% off in plant shop. Riverbend Bird Stroll – Warblers
