Great Parks Workshop Slated For Springfield

Great Parks, Great CommunitiesThere is still time to be heard as the Great Parks, Great Communities planning initiative heads to the Springfield District. After several successful meetings throughout Fairfax County, the Park Authority is asking those who live or recreate in the Springfield District to come out and help plan for the parks of the future. The workshop is slated for Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 7 p.m. and will take place at the West Springfield High School cafeteria. The school is located at 6100 Rolling Road in Springfield.

Great Parks, Great Communities is an exciting new planning process initiated to gather the public’s ideas for balancing Fairfax County’s future park needs and resources within each district of the County. You can help protect and preserve our natural and cultural resources and ensure quality places for the next generation to play hard and thrive by participating.

The Springfield District offers a choice of quality park facilities for the community to enjoy! Sports teams enjoy the many athletic fields at Braddock Park, Patriot Park and South Run District Park. New synthetic turf fields at these parks provide teams with additional field play time. South Run District Park also provides indoor aquatics, fitness and classes, indoor soccer and an Off-Leash Dog Area. For trail and nature enthusiasts, an extensive trail network takes you along stream valleys and lakes throughout the district. South Run Stream Valley Trail connects with the trail loop around beautiful Burke Lake Park, to the trails at South Run District Park and further south to Lake Mercer. Burke Lake Park provides opportunities for picnicking, fishing, disc golf, mini-golf and an 18-hole golf course. Further up the road, Twin Lakes offers two more 18-hole courses.

Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity, along with Park Authority Board Member Harold Pyon will host the workshop. Participants will have a chance to learn more about the parks in the district, to ask questions and to share ideas in person. The Great Parks, Great Communities website is a terrific resource. The site features an overview of our planning initiative, informative maps and district specific information, as well as the opportunity to provide online feedback.
