Field trips integrate SOL/Program of Studies with fun hands-on learning. Self-guided Activities: Active Ways to Explore the Outdoors with Your Family The Potomac River Gorge Trail - A Globally Rare Environment (8 yrs. and up), daily 7am-dusk, Riverbend Picnic area by the Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Enjoy a self-guided 2-mile hike along the Potomac River and find why The Nature Conservancy named the area "one of the most significant natural areas in the eastern United States." Fourteen trail stops reveal secrets of the Potomac River Gorge. The trail begins in the Riverbend picnic area and ends at Great Falls Park. FREE Kayak Tours Paddle the scenic and serene Potomac River in a kayak. The park offers a number of kayak tours (June-September) on a variety of topics. Most of our tours are designed for beginners. These are not whitewater tours. Introduce yourself to the world of kayaking, get some exercise and most of all enjoy the natural beauty of the river and wildlife. All of our instructors are certified with the American Canoe Association. Let your adventure begin here. Fishing rod/reel rentals Riverbend Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Don't have a fishing rod? We can rent you what you need to fish at the park. Our rod/reel combinations are perfect for beginners and children. We supply you with a rod/reel rigged with line and tackle to get you started. Our visitor center also sells fishing tackle. Rentals are available 9am-4pm weekdays, except Tuesdays, and noon-4pm on weekends and holidays. All rods must be returned by 5pm. Cost per rental is $6 (maximum two hours). A valid driver's license is required. A Virginia or Maryland freshwater fishing license is required for persons 16 years or older to fish. Go online to State of Virginia and get your license instantly. Reservations recommended due to limited availability. Boat rentals Jon boat and kayak rentals at Riverbend Park May 20 through October 10. May to August: Friday to Sunday 10a.m. to 6 p.m. September to October: Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jon boats (must be 16 yrs. to rent) are available for families, anglers, and anyone who wants to enjoy time on the river. Kayak rentals are available for previous participants of Riverbend Park kayak tours or rental certification classes. Half Day Rental - one person kayak or jon boat (up to 3 hours) = $15 Half Day Rental - two person kayak (up to 3 hours) = $25 All Day Rental - one person kayak or jon boat (3-6 hours) = $25 All Day Rental - two person kayak (3-6 hours) = $35 All boaters are advised to go upriver from the boat launch area to avoid the Aqueduct Dam which is located one mile down river. No boating is allowed past buoys down river. All rentals closed in hazardous conditions. Exercise and Art Riverbend Park offers low-impact exercise classes and art classes in the beautiful natural setting of the park.Get fit while enjoying natures changes during the seasons.
