Shapiro is currently the chair of the Planning and Development Committee and serves on Administration, Management and Budget, Funding Policy and Bond, Resource Management, and Strategic Planning and Initiatives Committees. Shapiro is currently employed as a budget analyst for the U.S. Department of Education. She has 25 years of experience as a volunteer with a variety of community organizations, including numerous community task forces, the Kings Park West Civic Association, local PTA's and the Boy Scouts. She served as president of the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Fairfax Area from 1989 - 1991, and on the State LWV Board from 1992 - 1995. She was named Braddock District Citizen of the Year for 2000. Balancing the two aspects of the Park Authority's mission - to protect and enhance environmental and cultural resources and to provide high-quality recreational facilities and services for all residents - is the most difficult challenge the Park Authority faces in the near term, according to Shapiro. Her priorities remain implementing the Park Authority's recently-adopted Natural Resources Management Plan and making recreational opportunities more accessible to a diverse community. |

Winifred S. (Winnie) Shapiro was appointed to the Park Authority Board as the representative from the Braddock District in February 1997. She served as Secretary-Treasurer in 2000 and as Chairman in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
