Winter Birds at Mason Neck
Search for bald eagles, tundra swans, hooded mergansers, ruddy ducks, and loons that winter along the Potomac from 10 to 1 p.m. Take a hike in the first wildlife refuge set aside to protect bald eagles. Pack a lunch and enjoy a bird discussion and picnic at Mason Neck State Park after our hike. Dress in warm layers, wear shoes for hiking. Bring your own binoculars and field guides if you have them, or share ours. Meet at the parking lot for the Great Marsh Trail at the Elizabeth Hartwell National Wildlife Refuge. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Riverbend Park, enjoy activities including guided stargazing, looking through the telescope, and listening to ancient stories about the constellations round the campfire. Other activities and games will be going on throughout the evening. Hot chocolate and snacks will be available for purchase. This program will be cancelled if raining or snowing. Flying Squirrels: Gliding in Tonight
Join the naturalist calling in these amazing gliders of the night and look for flying squirrels at roosting boxes near Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Learn how you can encourage flying squirrels to visit your yard.
