Saturday, July 4

Red, White & Blue Tournament

Teams of two players compete in an 18-hole scramble format using alternating tees (forward, middle, and back) at the annual 4th of July tournament at Burke Lake Golf Course from 8 a.m. to noon. The tournament is perfect for golfers seven years and older. There are closest to the pin contests and prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place teams. The rain date is July 11. The $60 per team fee includes lunch. Prepaid reservations are required. To reserve, call 703-323-1641.

Let Freedom Ring

Be a radical - use a quill pen to affix your personalized scrawl to our declaration to celebrate the 4th of July at Sully Historic Site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Let freedom ring! A guided tour is included in the cost of $6 per adult, $5 per student, and $4 per senior and child. For more information, call 703-437-1794.

Holiday Activites at Lake Fairfax Park

At Lake Fairfax Park in Reston the fun begins at 7 a.m. Visitors can picnic in the park, or purchase tickets for The Water Mine Swimmin Hole, open 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Vendors will offer a wide variety of food for purchase throughout the celebration, and children will find a moon bounce, dunk tank and an obstacle course to amuse them. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. Celebrants are encouraged to come early as parking is limited.

Snake & Turtle Feeding

Join a naturalist from 1 to 2 p.m. at Hidden Oaks Nature Center and watch at least one snake and two turtles being fed. This program is recommended for children ages 3 to 12 years. The cost is $5 per person. For prepaid reservations, call 703-941-1065.

Saturday and Sunday, July 11–12

World War II Living History

From10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, travel back to the World War II era as Sully Historic Site hosts Allied and Axis re-enactors for a weekend of demonstrations, memories and music. Get an up-close look at what life was like for soldiers and civilians throughout the war and talk to them about their jobs, living quarters, food and life in the 1940s. The cost is $7 per adult, $5 per senior and child. A house tour is included. For more information, call 703-437-1794

Sunday, July 12

Birding for Beginners

Come to Huntley Meadows Visitor Center from 8 to 11 a.m. to learn about the birds in the park and master basic identification skills. The program begins with a discussion of field guides and optics. The fee is $6 per adult. For prepaid reservations, call 703-768-2525.

Queen and King Snakes

Walk the creeks and streams of Ellanor C. Lawrence Park from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in search of queen and king snakes. Wear shoes that can get wet. Participants must be eight or older. The cost is $5 per person. For prepaid reservations, call 703-631-0013

Gardening in Virginia: Breaking the Rules

Explore a few of the fun ways to ignore age-old garden rules and customize your planting beds to suit the environment. Find out the new ideas at Green Spring Gardens from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The cost is $18 per person. Call 703-642-5173 to reserve.

Green Tree Frog Excursion

Look for green tree frogs at Mason Neck State Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a naturalist from Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Find out why some scientists believe they can predict weather. This program is perfect for all ages. The cost is $5 per person. For prepaid reservations, call 703-631-0013.

Ice Cream & Sorbet Tasting Party

Think outside the icebox and sample some delicious and unusual ices at Historic Green Spring from 10:30 a.m. to noon. We’ll show you how to churn your own ice cream creations and inspire you to experiment with store-bought ices – scoop after exotic scoop! The cost is $20 per person. Barbecuing 18th Century Style

Investigate new ideas for America’s favorite summer cooking pastime! Interact with interpreters at Historic Sully Site from 1 to 4 p.m. as they experiment with early cooking techniques. Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26

Buglover’s Paradise

Families with children four years and up will enjoy this outing from 10 a.m. to noon at Huntley Meadows Visitor Center. Look for grasshoppers, butterflies, ladybugs and leafhoppers. Stop by our classroom for self-guided activities, a craft and videos. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $4 per child. Call 703-768-2525 for reservations.

What’s On the Wall? Macro and More

From 11:30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m., photographer and citizen scientist Ed Eder will talk about his colorful close-up images of this microhabitat. There will be a closing reception with refreshments from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call Huntley Meadows at 703-768-2525.

Turtles

Nature lovers of all ages, come to Walney Pond at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park and meet a naturalist at the pond to learn about native turtles from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5 per person which includes a full English tea. To make a reservation before July 24, call 703-941-7987.
