New! Propagation Series: More Plants, Less Money

Expand the variety of flowers, vegetables and herbs in your garden by growing them at home from seeds, cuttings or divisions. Part 1: Starting from Scratch with Seeds will take place at Green Spring Gardens from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Learn to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs from seed. Discuss topics such as potting mixes, containers, seed treatments, lighting, fertilization, watering, seed sources and timing. Take home seeds to start your own collection. The next two sessions take place March 20 and April 10. The cost is $22 per session or $60 for the three-part series. To make a reservation, call 703-642-5173.

Raise the Rafters Concert

Join Katy Benko and Julie Crosson on a journey through the roots of rock at Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center from 2 to 3 p.m. The performances are interactive and focus on the history, musical styles and artists of a particular decade. Acoustic Jam

Come to Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center from 1 to 4 p.m. for a down-home jam session. Whether you’re pickin’, strummin or just listenin’ – it’s an old-fashioned knee-slappin’, finger-poppin’, toe-tappin’ good time! Bring your instrument or just drop by. Admission is free. Natural Valentines

At Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 1:30 to 3 p.m., four to nine-year-old kids will create nature-themed Valentine’s Day cards with natural items. Discover how animal sweethearts court. The cost is $5 per child. To reserve, call 703-941-1065.

New! Naturally Sweet

Adults, celebrate Valentine’s weekend in a natural way at Huntley Meadows Visitor Center from 1 to 3 p.m. Take a stroll with a naturalist through forest and meadow. Then warm up with a pastry and hot beverage at the popular coffeehouse, Grounded Coffee. Meet at the South Kings Highway entrance to the park. Refreshments will be included. Animal Sweethearts Dance

Don’t miss the fun at Hidden Pond Nature Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The annual West Springfield event for animal lovers is once again featuring plenty of dancing, limbo contests, and poems of love. Live animals, not-so-live animals, and the world premiere of the play, Pest Side Story, an intriguing tale of a pest control worker named Tony and an animal lover named Maria will be presented. Maple Syrup Boil-Down

Come to Colvin Run Mill from noon to 2 p.m. to watch and learn as sap is boiled down into sweet syrup over an open fire. Sample the delicious combination of maple syrup over fresh baked cornbread. A Hidden Oaks Nature Center naturalist presents a puppet show about dinosaurs at Woodrow Wilson Library in Falls Church, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Admission is free for all ages. To reserve, call the library at 703-820-8774.

All A-Buzz About Bees

Learn about our native bees at Huntley Meadows Visitor Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Learn what you can do to attract them to your gardens. We'll discuss the best plans for bee boxes and how to build them. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This activity is suited for anyone 11-years-old and older. The fee is $6 per person. Homemade bird feeders

Bring your empty milk jugs and/or two-liter soda bottles to make bird feeders at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. We will discuss tips for feeding birds and learn to identify common birds. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars. The cost is $10 per family. Sunday Matinee Movie: Pinocchio

Don’t miss Jiminy Cricket, Gepetto, the toymaker, Figuro, the cat, and memorable Disney music during a matinee showing of Pinocchio at Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. and again from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The Academy Award winning film, released in 1940, features the adventures of a little wooden puppet that longs to be a boy. Afterward, take a winter stroll and visit the many farm babies born in late winter. The G-rated film and farm visit are free. For more information, please call 703-437-9101.
