Grain Grinding at Colvin Run Mill

Grain Grinding
First and Third Sundays beginning April 2
noon-3 p.m.

No reservations required.
See and hear 19th century technology at work! The miller will be grinding, conditions permitting. Please call the site to confirm. Tour cost: $7 adults, $6 student 16 and up with ID, $5 child and senior.

Blacksmithing Demonstrations
First Sunday of the month and also July 30
11 a.m.-3 p.m.

No reservations required.
Watch as the blacksmith fires up his forge and works with hammer and tongs to make iron tools and utensils. FREE.

Northern Virginia Carvers
First and Third Sundays, June, July & August
noon-3 p.m.
No reservations required.
(12 years and older) The wood carvers lend their tools and expertise to help you uncover your hidden artistic talent as you create a creature from a block of wood. The lessons are free. There is a nominal charge for wood blanks.

40th Anniversary
Sunday, August 20
(All ages) Come enjoy a very special Grinding Day as the mill celebrates its 40th year on the National Register of Historic Places. Maintained by the National Park Service, The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation, and Colvin Run Mill has been on it since 1977. FREE.

Teas from Around the Globe
Saturday, September 16
1 to 3 p.m.

(16-Adult) Learn the ABC’s of the world’s many tea styles as you taste white, green, oolong, black and dark teas. In this seminar we will also explore te history, discuss the best brewing techniques and sample some tea-infused treats. A take home tea sampler is included. Presented by Certified Tea Specialist Chef Laurie Bell of Great Falls Tea Garden. Call site to register: 703-759-2771. Reservations required by Sept. 13. $35 per person

Scarecrow Making Workshops
Saturday, October 7
12-12:45 p.m. and 1-1:45 p.m.

Make a "friend" for your garden or lawn. Bring pants and shirt, plus an old pair of panty hose (for head and body). We supply the stuffing and know-how. The cost is $6 per scarecrow. Panty hose can be purchased on site for an additional $1. No reservations required.

The Wide World of Oolong Teas
Saturday, October 14
1 to 3 p.m.

(16-Adult) This seminar focuses exclusively on oolong teas, considered to be the most complex of all tea styles. From the newer, lightly oxidized styles to the traditional darker styles, we taste a variety of oolongs from several countries and sample some tea-infused treats. A take home tea sampler is included. Eating and Fighting Like a Sailor in the War of 1812
Sunday, November 12
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Colvin Run Mill welcomes the Ship’s Company for the first time! Reenactors portraying uniformed US Navy sailors from the war of 1812 will be on hand to demonstrate how these hard-serving men survived at sea during the Age of Sail. There will be demonstrations of the nutrition of the sailors and a cannon firing. Free

Premium Tea and Cheese Pairing
Saturday, November 18
1 to 3 p.m.

(16-Adult) Experience the many flavor profiles of premium teas and cheeses in this fun and interactive class as you learn a variety of pairing techniques. Taste tea- and cheese-infused treats and take home a tea sampler to create your own pairings. Presented by Certified Tea Specialist Chef Laurie Bell of Great Falls Tea Garden. Santa at the Mill
Saturday, December 9
3-6 p.m.
No reservations required.
(3-Adult) Enjoy old-fashioned family holiday fun at Colvin Run Mill. Visit Santa in the mill and see the Christmas tree trimmed with Victorian decorations. Join the costumed 49th Virginia Volunteer Infantry caroling around a bonfire. Roast marshmallows and make a family craft. Admission $5 per person.
