Colvin Run Mill Scouting Programs

Troop leaders!

Colvin Run Mill Historic Site offers scout programs for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts and Bear Cub Scouts by reservation. Call the site office for more information or to schedule a visit, 703-759-2771.

When: by appointment, any day except Tuesdays, starting no later than 3:30pm
Length: 1½ hours
Cost: Cost: $5 per scout, accompanying adults and other participating children

    What Makes America Special

    Your den will complete three requirements when they tour the mill and miller’s house and complete a craft activity about the state of Virginia.

    • Find out about an old home where you live.
    • Find out where places of historical interest are located in or near your town or city. Go and visit one of them with your family or den.
    • Choose a state. Name its state bird, tree and flower. Describe its flag.

    Your troop will complete three requirements when they tour the mill, visit the General Store and learn to dance the Virginia Reel in the barn.

    Your troop will fulfill three requirements for this try-it when they plan the right clothing for a hike while playing a relay game, take a 45 minute round-trip hike along the Cross County Trail and use all their senses to discover the natural world around them.

    Wave the Flag

    Your troop will complete four requirements for this try-it when they tour the mill, learn about the General Store, see our very special c. 1810 American flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes and complete a patriotic craft activity.

    Folk Arts

    Your troop will complete three requirements by examining historic photographs, sewing a sachet, examining items from the Hands-On History Trunk and visiting the General Store.

    Your troop will complete three requirements when they take a tour of the buildings at Colvin Run Mill Historic Site and search the site for clues to the past on in a Local Lore scavenger hunt.

    Your troop will complete three requirements when they tour the mill and miller’s house. They will learn about the life and times of Emma Millard, who raised her large family in the Miller’s House and carried on the family mill business when her husband died.
