Elementary Program [details]
A museum education program for elementary students in grades two through five uses three learning centers (mill, barn and store) to teach children about the site's rich social, commercial and engineering history. This program has been tailored to closely follow the state-wide Virginia Standards of Learning for elementary students. In addition to Virginia history, the elementary curriculum introduces the study of simple machines, and provides the unique opportunity for students to see simple machines in use.
Masters of Colvin Run Mill
Preschool Program [details]
In the preschool program, children ages three to five tour the mill and meet four puppets - Marvin the Miller, Alvin his teenaged apprentice, and Fred and Matilda, a farming couple - who talk to the children about how the miller and farmers worked together to produce flour and meal. The children also hear the story of the Little Red Hen and explore the Hands-On-History Trunk in the barn.
A small picnic area is available for on-site lunches. In inclement weather the barn may be used for lunch by pre-arrangement.
