Kids’ Korner June - Water Snakes at Walney Pond June1 Friday (Adults), 7am-5pm. Migrating warblers and other songbirds are numerous along the southern edge of the Potomac River in spring. Up to 91 species have been seen on this trip. Visit Westmoreland State Park and George Washington's Birthplace. Bring a bag lunch and binoculars. Wear sturdy walking shoes. Some moderate-level walking. Van leaves from Packard Center in Annandale District Park. Reservations and advanced payment required by 4/23. $25 July8 Wednesday (Families), 8-9pm. Join a naturalist for a night hike to learn about our native reptiles that become nocturnal during the warmer months. Return to our campfire to roast marshmallows and make s’mores. Reservations and advance payment by 7/1. $10/family 12 Sunday (8 yrs. and up), 9-10:30am. Walk the creeks and streams in search of queen and king snakes. Learn about these two unique species while having fun. Soft shell crayfish is on the queen snake’s diet, and the queen snake is on the king snake’s diet. Wear shoes that can get wet. Reservations and advanced payment required by 6/27. $5 18 Saturday (All ages), 10am-2pm. Meet at Mason Neck State Park to look for green tree frogs. Learn about these awesome amphibians and find out why some scientists believe they can predict weather. Reservation and advanced payment required by 7/18. Directions provided. $5/person 21 Tuesday (8 yrs. and up), 9-11am. Assist a naturalist with a reptile survey. Head out into the outback of Ellanor C. Lawrence Park to search for and capture water snakes. Learn the habits and preferred habitats of the aggressive but misunderstood snake. Wear shoes that can get wet. Reservations and advanced payment required by 7/18. $5 22 Wednesday (All ages), 8-9pm, Cabell’s Mill. Explore Big Rocky Run Stream at night! When the park shuts down nocturnal animals come out. Bring flashlights and wear good hiking shoes for this hike to locate and identify local nocturnal critters. $5/person 26 Sunday (All ages), 10-11am, Walney Pond. Meet a naturalist at Walney pond to learn about native turtles. See turtles close up and then search for them at the pond. Reservations and advanced payment required by 7/24. $5/person August8 Saturday 9-11am. Stroll four miles along Cub Run and experience natural and cultural history hot spots of this unique stream valley. Be entertained by stories while enjoying low impact, outdoor exercise. Meet at the Prince Way trail head off Route 29. Reservations and payment required by 8/5. $3 11 Tuesday (8 yrs. and up), 9-11am. Assist a naturalist with a reptile survey. Head out into the outback of Ellanor C. Lawrence Park to search for, capture, identify and release reptiles. Learn the habits and preferred habitats of our native snakes. Reservations and advanced payment required by 8/8. $5 16 Sunday (All ages), 10-11am. Watch a short movie on our native lizards and see some of our lizards up close. Join a naturalist on a short hike to try and find some of these elusive reptiles. Reservations and advanced payment by 8/13. $5/person 19 Wednesday 7-8pm. Find out how to attract butterflies and our local ruby-throated hummingbirds to your yard or patio using plants and/or special feeders. Make your own simple hummingbird feeder to hang outside a window, and receive flower seedlings attractive to butterflies. Reservations required. $3/person 26 Wednesday (Families), 7-8pm. Join a naturalist for a night hike to learn about the park’s nocturnal animals. Catch and release fireflies, locate bats with a bat detector, and search for other live animals. At the campfire roast marshmallows and make s’mores. Reservations and advance payment required by 8/13. $10/family
