Activities and Programs at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

The Walney Visitor Center features natural and cultural exhibits and a hands-on area to introduce the public to the past farmland and present parkland. Programs are regularly scheduled. Scavenger-hunt lists, self-guide maps for our orienteering courses and scout packages are available to rent or purchase at the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday, Wednesday-Friday; noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, closed Tuesdays.

Come Discover Bats This September

Batty Campfire
Saturday, September 20, 7 p.m.

Use a bat detector to hear bats communicate and hunt. Enjoy the night hike and have s’mores. Meet at Cabell’s Mill. The cost is $6/person. Read More >>

Walney Time Travel:Peach Cobbler Campfire
Saturday, September 6, 6:30 p.m.

Bring your appetite and learn about the lives of the parks 18th century and early 19th century resident as interpreters in period attire demonstrate cooking a peach cobbler using a Dutch oven. The cost is $8 for county residents and $10 for out of county.

Night Owl Hike and Campfire
Saturday, October 25, 6:30 p.m

At day's end, hike to look and listen for park wildlife. While sitting around the campfire, visit with our resident barred owl and enjoy s'mores. Bring a flashlight and blanket to sit on. The cost is $7 for county residents and $9 for out of county.

Turkey Walk at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

Discover the wild turkey's habits and secret ways during a walk in the cedar forest. Look for wild turkeys and their signs. The cost is $5 for county residents and $7 for out of county.

Holidays at Walney Farm
Saturday, December 13, 1 p.m.

Celebrate the winter holidays with the Machen family at Walney Farm. Learn about the gifts and foods of an 1850 Virginia farm. Create your own historic holiday ornament. Enjoy hot apple cider and baked treats. The cost is $8 for county residents and $10 for out of county.

(12 yrs. - Adult) Children under 16 should be accompanied by a registered adult. Get on the trail with Mark, Mike and Tony, three of the area's best local herpotologists and visit local herp hotspots, places where reptiles and amphibians may be found. Bring a bag lunch. Van trip includes a moderate hike; van departs Ellanor C. Lawrence Park $24/person
