Junior Ranger Program
Junior Ranger Program Patch

Children who complete the Junior Ranger Booklet can take it to the Country Store or the Park Office for verification. Completion of the booklet entitles children to purchase a Junior Ranger Patch.

General Notes:

  • Reminder for all parents:   Children should be dressed for the weather!  

The barn, indoor arena and Meeting House are not heated or air conditioned.

  • For badge programs, all requirements are met to complete the badge.  
  • For elective programs, the electives listed are covered.
  • Scout leaders will need to purchase the badges separately.

 

Daisy

Using Resources Wisely:

Length: 1 hour
Meets: Kiosk
Concludes: Kidwell Barn classroom

Requirements covered:
Green petal (the petal is the Daisy equivalent of a badge, and the girls complete their Green petal for Using Resources Wisely at the program)

Brownies

Note:   A Try-It is a Brownie name for a badge.

Animal Try-It:

Length:   1 hour
Meets:   Kiosk
Concludes:   Kidwell Barn classroom

½ program is outside, ½ is in the barn

Requirements covered:
1 Caring for Pets
2 Understanding Animals
4 Looks mean something
5 Animal Charades

Listening to the Past Try-It:

Length:   1 ½ hours
Meets:   Schoolhouse or Kiosk
Concludes:   Baptist Meeting House on Old Centerville road

NOTE:   The location of this program is dependent on weather and daylight remaining.   Drivers may be needed to transport Brownies between locations.

Length:   2 hours

Horse Fan:

Length: 1 ½ hours

Concludes: Indoor Arena (where horse show is held)

1 hour with instructor in barn, ½ hour with parent or troop leader at horse show

Cadette/Senior Girl Scouts

All About Birds Interest Project:

Length:   2 hours
Meets:   Visitor Center                  
Concludes: Visitor Center

Requirements covered:
Skill Builder 2 Bird identification (includes classroom plus bird walk)
Skill Builder 3 Bird song
Skill Builder 5 Bird feeding
Skill Builder 6 Bird art
Technology 4 Environmental problems

  • This completes the requirements for the Interest Project Patch (IPP)

Tiger Cub Scouts

Making My Family Special, Achievement #1:

Length: 1 hour
Meets: Kiosk
Concludes: Kidwell Farmhouse

Requirements covered:
1g             Go see it activity (They will visit an old farm or historical building... (and) discover how family life was the same and how it was different many years ago.)

  • This covers the Go see it portion of the Making My Family Special Achievement, which is a required activity, not an elective.

 

Bear Cub Scouts

What Makes America Special, Achievement #3:

Length: 1 hour
Meets: Kiosk
Concludes: Meeting house on Centreville Rd. (or farmyard)

NOTE:   The location of this program is dependent on weather and daylight remaining.   Drivers may be needed to transport Scouts between locations.

Requirements covered:
b Important Americans
c Two old homes
d Visit a historic building (Meeting House)
e State emblems

  • They will complete the requirements for this Achievement.

 

Farm Animals, Elective #16:

Length: 1 hour
Meets: Kiosk
Concludes: Kidwell Barn classroom

½ hour outside, ½ hour in barn classroom

Requirements covered:
a Take care of a farm animal (grooming)
b Six breeds of farm animals and uses
c Story about a farm animal
d Visit a livestock exhibit (Kidwell Farm)

Wolf Cub Scouts

Machine Power, Elective #8:

Length: 1 ½  hour
Meets: Kiosk
Concludes: Kidwell barn classroom

Requirements covered:
a Name ten machines
b Use a wheel and axle
c Use a pulley
d Observe a windlass

 

Bird Arrow Point, Elective #13:

Length: 1 ½ hours
Meets:   Visitor Center
Concludes:   Visitor Center

Requirements covered:
Elective # 13
a   Make a list of all the birds you saw in a week and tell where you saw them
b   Put out nesting material for birds and tell which birds might use it.
c   Read a book about birds.
d   Point out 10 different kinds of birds
e   Feed wild birds and tell which birds you fed
f   Put out a birdhouse and tell which birds use it (plans provided for take-home activity)

Webelos

Forester Activity Badge:

Length: 1 ½ hours
Meets: Kiosk or Visitor Center            
Concludes: Kiosk or Visitor Center
Note: Wear sturdy shoes/boots.

Requirements covered:
1 Make a map of the US. Show the types of forest growing in different parts of the
country.
3 Identify six forest trees
4 Identify six forest plants
6 Examine tree growth rings
7 Investigate three different kinds of lumber used for building houses

  • The Activity Badge will be completed.

Boy Scouts

Animal Science Merit Badge:

Length: 2 hours
Meets: Kidwell Barn classroom
Concludes: Kidwell Barn classroom

Fulfills all requirements including the Dairy Option
Bring blue card for instructor to sign

Requirements covered:

2 Principal diseases

1&2 Scientific classification of three mammals
3c Life history of the rabbit, both wild and domesticated
4d Observing a tracking pit, identifying mammal tracks
5 Increasing habitat space for small mammals by building a brush pile

Environmental Science Merit Badge:

Length:   2 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each
Meets:   Visitor Center or Kidwell Barn classroom
Concludes:   same as start
