Frying Pan Farm Park, Field Trips

Fieldtrips and Outreach

Sold out: School Fields trips for the spring 2016 season a currently fully booked.

2016-17: Field trip bookings for the 2016-17 season will open in August of 2016 and will be taken via an online request calendar. Both Fall of 2016 and Spring of 2017 will be open for reservation in August of 2016.

Schedule a Pre-school and K-3rd Grade Field Trip

  • Mondays - Fridays
  • Fairfax County schools: $4/student
  • Out-of-county schools: $5/student

Frying Pan Farm Park is pleased to offer education programs and guided tours for school field trips and programs. Programs reinforce the Virginia Standards of Learning for the appropriate grade level.

Admission to Frying Pan Farm Park is FREE. Kidwell Farm at Frying Pan Farm Park, is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Self-guided days are available for pre-school and other groups who would like to explore the farm and park on their own.

Pre-K through 3rd grade programs use the Farm entrance at 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon, VA 20171.

Choose from instructional programs which complement your curriculum:

Preschool: Farm Mystery - Who Laid the Eggs?

Pre-school Group Tour

The Farm Mystery program illustrates how the farmer provides farm birds with food, water and shelter and in return they produce eggs for the family. Participants then get a guided tour the farm birds and guess who laid each of the different eggs in the egg carton.

No out of county fee. $4 per student.
Length: 30 Minutes

Kindergarten: The Milky Way

The Milky Way

The Milky Way Milk a model cow and meet a farm animal. From babyhood to milking, learn what life is like for dairy animals.

Length: 30 Minutes

1st Grade: The Farm Family

The Farm Family

Farm Family Program through discussion and hands-on activities, learn about traditional “Farm Family” roles and how they compare to modern family roles.

Length: One Hour

2nd Grade: MOOving the Milk to Town Walk

MOOving the Milk to Town Walk

MOOving the Milk to Town Walk in the boots of a dairy farmer. Getting the milk from a dairy farm to the consumer’s table is discussed. Students learn the process, then get to act it out during a hands-on game while exchanging money along the way.

Length: One Hour

3rd Grade: Simple Machines on the Farm

Simple Machines on the Farm

Simple Machines on the Farm Come explore the farm and discover how six simple machines make our work easier. Students will also get hands on experience using some simple machines.

Length: One Hour
SOL Requirements: Science 3.2, Force/Motion/Energy

4th Grade: See Plants Win

  • What do all plants need to win at life? Find out through this outreach program when Frying Pan Farm Park comes to you. A fantastic way to bring 4th Grade science to life, our excellent interpreters visit your site and deliver a 60 minute program to your class!

  • Time: 60 Minutes
  • Standards of Learning: 4th Grade Science 4.4, 4.5
  • Available: January—March
  • Audience: One class of up to 30 kids. Have more than the listed maximum of children per class? Please contact us about pricing options. Have more than 4 classes? Please contact us about scheduling options.
  • Pricing: $150/class (in Fairfax County) or $200/ class (outside Fairfax County). Prices include travel fees and supplies. $125 for each additional class. $175 for each additional class (outside Fairfax County).

Bring your campers to the farm! Frying Pan offers specialty field trips programs from June - August

Funny Foxes Hunt and Peck
Hunt the farm for clues to solve the mystery of the fox. Splash through the past in our washtub race relay.

  • Program: 60 minutes
  • Cost: $5/child. Min 10, max 20

Superheroes to the Rescue
Campers learn more about the animals that have inspired our favorite superheroes. During a hands-on, interactive presentation, kids discover the special superpowers of spiders, bats, cats and other animals. Campers understand how our super powered animal friends are helping humans survive every day, and how they can return the favor!

  • Program: 60 minutes
  • Cost: $5/child. Min 10, max 35 children
  • Ages: 6-12

Wagon Rides

Include a Wagon Ride to you field trip program!

Add a Wagon Ride to your field trip program This option is only available for Pre-school through 3rd grade field trips, self-guided tour groups, and summer camp field trips.

  • Each ride lasts 20-25 minutes
  • Group reservations are required
  • Cost is $3 per rider, 2 and older
  • Maximum 30 people per ride
