Frying Pan Farm Park is pleased to offer education programs and guided tours for school field trips and programs. Programs reinforce the Virginia Standards of Learning for the appropriate grade level.

K through 3rd grade programs use the Farm entrance at 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon, VA 20171.

5th grade programs use the Visitor Center entrance at 2739 West Ox Road, Herndon, VA 20171.

Choose from instructional programs which complement your curriculum:

Preschool Group Tour

Pre-school Group Tour

Frying Pan Farm Park offers a special program for preschool groups. Children are led on a guided tour where they visit and learn about the farm animals and solve a mystery.

Length: 30 Minutes

Admission to Frying Pan Farm Park is FREE. Kidwell Farm at Frying Pan Farm Park, is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Self-guided days are available for pre-school and other groups who would like to explore the farm and park on their own.

Kindergaten: The Milky Way

The Milky Way

The Milky Way Milk a model cow and meet a farm animal. From babyhood to milking, learn what life is like for dairy animals.

Length: 30 Minutes
SOL Tie Ins: Science: K.1, K.6, K.8; Health and Wellness K.1

1st Grade: The Farm Family

The Farm Family

Farm Family Program Through discussion and hands-on activities, learn about traditional “Farm Family” roles and how they compare to modern family roles.

Length: One Hour
SOL Tie Ins: History and Social Science: 1.1, 1.7, 1.9

2nd Grade: MOOving the Milk to Town Walk

MOOving the Milk to Town Walk

MOOving the Milk to Town Walk in the boots of a dairy farmer. Getting the milk from a dairy farm to the consumer’s table is discussed. Students learn the process, then get to act it out during a hands-on game while exchanging money along the way.

Length: One Hour

3rd Grade: Simple Machines on the Farm

Simple Machines on the Farm

Simple Machines on the Farm Come explore the farm and discover how six simple machines make our work easier. Students will also get hands on experience using some simple machines.

Length: One Hour
SOL Requirements: Science 3.2, Force/Motion/Energy

4th Grade: See Plants Win

See Plants Win!

What do all plants need to WIN at life? Students will demonstrate their understanding of the structure, functions, and adaptations of plant life as they work in groups to design and construct a model of a successful plant. Each creatively constructed, fantastic flora will have the ability to photosynthesize, acquire water, protect itself from both predators and the environment, attract pollinators, and disperse its seeds. Students will be successful at understanding plants, and having fun!

Length: Frying Pan Farm Park’s excellent educators will visit your school and teach a 60 minute program!
SOL Requirements: Science 4.4, 4.5

5th Grade: Earth and Sky

Earth and Sky

Bring your 5th grade classes out for a fun and educational adventure into how our wonderful world works!! This program is a great complement for the Landforms Unit and reviews components from the 4th grade Weather and Beyond Unit.

Length: 2 hours
SOL Requirements: 4th Grade SOL’s 4.1, 4.6 and 5th Grade SOL’s 5.1, 5.7

Seasonal Fieldtrip and Outreach Program Offerings

4th Grade: See Plants Win
(Field trip Outreach Program)
  • Program Available: Tuesdays – Fridays, January-March (or by appointment only)
  • Fairfax County: $150/class, includes travel fee within Fairfax County and supplies. $125 for each additional class.
  • Out-of County: $200/class includes the additional travel fee outside Fairfax County and supplies. $175 for each additional class.
  • Have more than 4 classes? Please contact us about scheduling options.
5th Grade: Earth and Sky
  • Fairfax County schools: $7/student
  • Out-of-county schools: $8/student

Wagon Rides

Include a Wagon Ride to your fieldtrip Program! This option is only avialable for Pre-school through 3rd grade intepretive programs and self-guided tour groups.

  • Each ride lasts 20 minutes
  • Group reservations are required
  • Cost is $3 per rider, 2 and older
  • Maximum 25 people per ride
