It didn’t take long for 9-year-old Liam Nowlin to get what golfers call “the bug.” It all started when his mother, Maryellen, signed him up for camp. “When I asked him about summer camps, the one thing he really wanted to learn to play was golf,” she said. “After the second or third day of the five-day camp, he asked if I would sign him up for the next golf camp because he was having so much fun. It’s the one sport he can do well.” Liam and a friend attended the camp together at Twin Lakes Academy, and he quickly caught on to the game’s fundamentals. “It was fun doing the driving range and being able to whack balls a lot,” said the budding golfer. “I also liked the scramble on some holes.” His favorite golf club is “the driver because it hits the farthest,” and he respects the putter, “because it’s the most important club that helps you on the green.”
“I started him 100 yards from the tee, and he was doing well enough that I knew how badly I was going to get spanked,” his father said. “We had to back him up.” Liam played so well, it inspired his uncles to take him out for a second round two days later. “We played the adult course at speed,” Gary said in amazement. “The fact that he can hit 100 to 125 yards straight shows what good coaching and teaching he received in his camp and lessons, and they’ve provided a good foundation for him.” It’s too early to tell whether left-handed Liam (who plays righty) will follow in the footsteps of his favorite pro, Tiger Woods, or just stick to chasing the leading adult in his family’s Thanksgiving tournament. “I think I finished number two behind Uncle Denny,” he said proudly. But come spring, you can count on seeing him playing at Twin Lakes Golf Course, “because it’s not just par 3s,” he said with a competitive smile. “It has longer holes.” |
