Outdoor Summer Fun for School-aged Kids

Looking for a special way to fill the long, hot days of summer with your children … or children’s group? Leave no child inside! Discover Green Spring’s colorful gardens, hike the shady, forest trail, and explore nature with our hands-on programs. Call 703-642-5173 to register.

Harry Potter’s Plants and Potions (6-12 yrs.) Calling all Muggles! Conjure up some magic in our gardens as we hunt for Harry Potter’s favorite plants. Explore their lore. Learn how to craft a wizard’s wand and make potions. Available: June-August, Mondays-Fridays, 10-11am or 11am-noon. $6/student

Arts al Fresco Lab
Monday-Friday, June 23-27, 9am-noon

(6-12 yrs.) Nature is our classroom as we experiment with art using different medium each day: sketching, painting, journaling, photography, crafts. Colorful gardens and cool woodlands provide a healthy environment and creative inspiration. $135/student includes supplies and light snacks. Prepayment to FCPA; refunds require two weeks written notice.

Butterfly Lab
Session I: Monday-Friday, August 11-15, 9am-noon
Session II: Monday-Friday, August 18-22, 9am-noon

(6-12 yrs.) Raise butterflies in our lab and see their life stages up close. Hunt for butterflies in the gardens and watch their fascinating life cycle unfold right before your eyes. Study their magical metamorphosis. Learn how important these pollinators are in our environment. $135/student includes supplies and light snacks. Prepayment to FCPA; refunds require two weeks written notice.

Lamb’s Ears and Dandy Lions

Search for spider plants, catmints, elephant’s ears, and monkey grasses as we find plants with animal names hidden in the garden. $6

Tops and Bottoms

Explore the vegetable garden to learn about the plants we eat – roots, tubers and shoots – enjoy a healthy snack, then make a tops and bottoms garden of your own. $6

Water, Water Everywhere

Help us collect stream water from Turkeycock Run, learn about the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and make an ocean in a bottle. $6

Berry-licious

Berry, berry: who’s got the berry?  Raspberry, huckleberry, blueberry: which is your favorite? Learn about fruit and hunt for berries in our gardens. $6

Green, Green Grasses

Visit a variety of large and small ornamental grasses in the gardens, and then make your own green-haired grass creature to take home! $6

21 Thursday or 23 Saturday
Pick a Peck of Peppers

Have fun picking, printing, and playing with purple, yellow, orange, green, and red peppers. Then make a tasty salsa treat! $6

 

 

FAMILY FUN PROGRAMS

Older children (6 yrs. and up) with accompanying adult(s) discover the science of plants and nature through lessons, activities, and outdoor exploration.

May 31 Saturday
Nuts to You!

2-3:30pm. Plant peanuts in our garden and discover the fascinating way they grow. Learn how to cultivate your own. Try a taste of these nutritional, nutty 'legumes.' Visit our garden all season long to watch the peanuts grow and come back in October for the peanut harvest. $10/family

Kids' Gardening Program

Saturdays, June 7-August 16, 1-3pm
(8-12 yrs.) Kids, do you enjoy sprouting seeds, growing vegetables, planting flowers, exploring soil, and other outdoor fun? Then dig into fun this summer. Enjoy garden lessons, hands-on activities, and grow your own garden with help from Green Spring staff and Master Gardeners. $100/student
