Field Trip ProgramsExperience the unusual in one of the most beautiful public gardens in the region. Our programs deliver quality instruction with interactive learning that’s fun for all ages. Grade 1: Bees, Bugs, and Big Trees

October and November 2007
10:00 am—12:00 noon Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays

Virginia SOL: Science 1.4, 1.7, 1.8

Share a Native American tale of creation in our story circle. Explore pollination in our apple orchard, decomposition at our compost bins, and tree identification on our self-guided, woodland trail hike. Dress for the weather. $6/student includes snacks and teacher resource packet.

March and April 2008

Virginia SOL: Science 2.4, 2.5, 3.4, 3.6

Wander our watershed and learn the life cycle of the frog. Follow the incredible journey of the tiny monarch caterpillar through metamorphosis and migration. Peer through magnifiers to examine the cycle of seed to flower to fruit in our botany lab. Dress for the weather. $7/student includes snacks and teacher resource packet.

Grade 3: Predators and Prey

January and February 2008
10:00 am—12:00 noon Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays

Virginia SOL: Science 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.10

Plant or animal, producer or consumer, carnivore or herbivore — which are you? Discover how animals adapt when survival’s the name of the game. Watch real wildlife through binoculars. Get the scoop on dirt in our soil lab. And play the food chain game. Dress for the weather. $7/student includes snacks and teacher resource packet.

Grades 3 and 5: Soil Secrets

February and March 2008
10:00 am—12:00 noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Virginia SOL: Science 3.7, 3.9, 5.1, 5.7; VS.2

Journey into geology through the rock and soil cycle, weathering and erosion, and plate tectonics. Examine water’s role in shaping the land. Tour the park to discover what lies beneath and how archeology unearths our past. Dress for the weather. $7/student includes snack and teacher resource packet.

Grade 4: Peanuts, Popcorn, and Pipe Tobacco — Jamestown’s 400th!

September and October 2007
10:00 am—12:00 noon Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays

Virginia SOL: Science 4.4, 4.8; History and Social Studies 4.2, 4.3; VS2, 3, 4

Discover these important colonial cash crops — peanuts, tobacco, and corn — in our gardens. Learn their history, botany, and uses. Commemorate Jamestown’s 400th anniversary with a Virginia history garden for your school! Dress for the weather. $7/student includes snacks and teacher resource packet.

Grades 4 and 5: Puzzles of Our Past — Historic Documents and Artifacts

Year-round
12:00 noon—2:00 pm Mondays through Fridays

Virginia SOL: History and Social Studies 4.7, 5.9

This exciting new program examines historic documents used by past residents of our Historic House , circa 1760. Students interpret documents and explore archeology through hands-on exhibits, and tour the park’s historic features. Due to the interactive nature of this program, class is limited to 30 students. $10/student includes materials and teacher resource packet.
