Harry Allen Winter Lecture Series

Each year the Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) sponsor the Winter Lecture Series. This popular series features illustrated talks by authors, horticulturalists, artists, garden designers, scientists, and others on the cutting edge of horticulture. After the lecture meet the speakers and enjoy refreshments. $10/lecture

1:30-3pm. Richard Olsen, a research geneticist and lead scientist for the urban tree breeding program at the U.S. National Arboretum presents both his researcher's view and personal view of what woody plants we should be growing in our gardens. $10

Wildflowers in Africa: Adventures in Compiling the First Wildflower Guide for Zambia

1:30-3pm. Come along on an adventure with artist, Doreen Bolnick, as she shares stories about the plants and her time in Zambia. $10

Mysteries of Orchid Pollination

1:30-3pm. Tom Mirenda, Smithsonian Horticulturalist, demystifies orchid pollination. From mating deceptions to pseudo-copulation, Tom will describe how these beguiling plants manage to "have their way" with insects, birds and man, too. $10

1:30-3pm. Michael Twitty, culinary historian and interpretive educator, takes us on a journey as he discusses the culinary connections and historic foodways of Africans and Native Americans in Virginia. $10

1:30-3pm. By integrating native plants into the designed landscape you help reduce negative impact on our environment. Sandra Clinton, of Clinton and Associates, discusses the how's and why's of integrating native plants into the designed landscape using examples from landscape architects on the forefront of this movement. $10

Luscious Landscaping with Fruiting Trees, Shrubs and Vines

1:30-3pm.What could be more pleasant than picking fruit from a plant you also admire for its beauty? Lee Reich, author, of Landscaping with Fruit, introduces you to the best trees, shrubs and vines for flowers, color and form. Books will be available for purchase and signing. $10

It's A Jungle Out There: Creating and Growing Your Own Tropical Paradise in a Non Tropical Climate

1:30-3pm. Learn how to create, grow and overwinter your piece of paradise. Joe Seamone, aka Boca Joe, describes the best and most dramatic plants for your garden. Tour amazing "tropical" gardens located in the Washington, D.C. area and across the country. Don't miss this chance to learn about planting outside the zone. $10

Trees for All Seasons

1:30-3pm. Sean Hogan opens our eyes to an unexplored world of foliar beauty from China and Japan to Australia and New Zealand. He is the co-founder of Cistus Nursery in Portland, Oregon, a nursery world-famous for its collection of rare plants and display gardens. His new book, Trees for All Seasons, explores evergreen broadleaved trees. Books will be available for purchase and signing. $10

Managing Wildlife Conflict

1:30-3pm. Are you having troubles with deer and rabbits feasting on your garden? This is the lecture for you. Victoria Monroe, Wildlife Biologist for Fairfax County will discuss strategies for managing wildlife conflicts in your garden. $10
