Why are there ribbons and stakes all over the park?Answer
We have started to flag areas in the park that might experience disturbance or construction during the restoration project.
Visitors to the park will see various ribbons and stakes, most of them with striping of either orange and white or pink and black. Some say "wetland delineation", others may have different markings.
We are in the exploratory, beginning stages of marking and surveying the park for the restoration construction. Over the next year there will be quite a lot of different ribbons and stakes going up, coming down and going up again as we move through various surveys, permitting and project components. Often it will be park staff laying out the various flaggings, but at least half the time it will be other agencies including various regulatory folks from county, state and federal permitting offices.
We will do our best to keep park visitors abreast of what different markings signify - please feel free to contact the park manager, Kevin Munroe if you have specific questions. You can reach Kevin at 703-768-2525 or by stopping by the center Tuesday through Saturday.
Huntley Meadows Park Wetland Restoration Project
Join Huntley Meadows staff for a series of presentations and discussions about upcoming restoration in the park's central wetland.
This series began with a public forum on May 30, 2007 that included a presentation on the history of the park's central wetland. This was followed by a plan for restoring the wetland to its previous, more water-filled condition with the aid of an earthen berm, water control structure, sediment pond and several wetland pools. The evening ended with a very productive series of small group discussions that gathered valuable input from the public - all of which will be considered and incorporated whenever possible into the developing restoration plans. In particular, after much discussion and thoughful examination of the design, it was decided to remove the sediment pond and reduce the number of wetland pools from seven to four.
Please join us for the rest of this series and bring your ideas, suggestions, concerns and thoughts on the park, wetlands and ecological restoration. Your input is an important part of this process. We look forward to meeting you and discussing all the issues and ideas connected with wetland restoration.
