1) How can I reserve a shelter or picnic area?
Picnic areas and shelters are available for rental and are first come first serve, however, a patron without a reservation must yield to a patron showing proof of one. To make a reservation please call Park Services at 703-324-8732. They will help to obtain the reservation, public gathering permit, and info on health requirements if food is to be sold, as well as any other reservation questions you have.
2) What time do the parks close?
Lake Accotink Park as well as all other parks close at dark with the exception of lighted facilities. If you are inquiring about a particular facility within a park, like a recreation center, you may call them directly.
1) When will a park or field be mowed?
Call the Park Office at 703-569-0285 for the park's mowing schedule.
2) Where do I call to arrange for the removal of hazardous trees on park land?
Call the Park Office at 703-569-0285. Please note that in most cases trees requiring removal are felled and left in undeveloped areas of the park to provide shelter/habitat for animals living in the park.
3) Are live trees removed from park land?
Live trees are sometimes removed from park land if, once inspected by our Forestry Crew, it is determined that the tree may pose a threat to the general public or adjacent structures.
4) Where do I call to report playground equipment requiring repairs?
Required repairs may be reported to the Park Office at 703-569-0285.
5) Who do I call if I discover a dead animal in the park?
You may call the Park Office at 703-569-0285 to arrange for its removal.
6) Beavers are building a dam which is impacting private property. Who do I call?
All concerns regarding beavers or any other wildlife may be relayed to the Resource Management Division. You may call them at 703-324-8674 to schedule an inspection for an assessment and recommendation.
7) How do I stop my neighbors from dumping or encroaching onto park land?
Please call the Lake Accotink Park Office at 703-569-0285 to report any possible illegal dumping or encroaching onto park land. The information will be forwarded to an inspector who will check the area and take appropriate action. It may also require the installation of a "No Dumping" sign. It is also recommended that the area's neighborhood association include a message in their newsletter informing their neighbors that dumping and encroaching onto park land is illegal.
8) How often is trash removed from the parks?
During the late Fall through early Spring trashcans are emptied every Monday at Lake Accotink. If a Monday falls on a holiday, the cans will be emptied on the following Tuesday. However, during Spring and Summer seasons trashcans are emptied every day or as necessary. If you notice full trashcans you can call the park at 703-569-0285 to have them emptied.
9) I have discovered poison ivy in the park. Who do I call to get it removed?
Poison ivy is not routinely removed from park land unless it is near a playground, on a trail or other high-use area. Poison ivy is native to Virginia and is considered a natural part of our parks.
1) How can I find out if an athletic field is opened or closed during inclement weather?
Information on the closing of athletic fields is provided by the Department of Recreation's information line at 703-324-5264. The current day's closings are posted after 12 Noon.
2) Who do I call to find out if a park is closed due to inclement weather?
Lake Accotink Park is closed only due to emergencies or severe weather. (i.e. Storms, Blizzards, Hurricanes) You can call the Lake Accotink Park Office at 703-569-0285 to get updated information.
1) May I remove firewood from the park?
No. It is illegal to remove anything from park land. Downed trees and limbs are often left in an undeveloped area of a park for animal shelter/habitat and recycled into the earth to provide soil nutrients and to ensure reforestation.
2) Is golfing permitted in the parks?
Golfing is only permitted in designated golfing areas, such as our golf courses and driving ranges. Golfing is prohibited in other areas of the parks because it poses a danger to other patrons and mowing equipment causing a potential liability to the Park Authority. 3) Are dogs allowed to be off their leashes in the parks?
No. Citizens must comply with the Fairfax County Leash Law which requires dogs to be on a leash at all times when in a public space and the additional requirement of cleaning up after them. The Park Authority posts signs accordingly. Enforcement is by Fairfax County, Department of Animal Control at 703-830-3680. The Park Authority currently has "Off-Leash" dog areas at 5 different park sites.
4) Does the Fairfax County Park Authority have Park Police?
No. Park Rules and Regulations are enforced by the Park Staff and the Fairfax County Police Department. For Non-Emergencies, please notify a staff member or call Police Non-Emergency Line at 703-691-2131.
5) Is all park land in Fairfax County owned and operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority?
No. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority owns and operates some of the larger parks, such as Bull Run, Occoquan and Fountain Head. They may be reached by calling 703-352-5900. The National Park Service also owns some land in Fairfax County. They may be reached by calling 202-208-3100. Other park land is owned by the state, and some is owned by towns, such as Vienna.
6) May I bring my own grill into a park?
We strongly discourage anyone from bringing their own grill into a park. Most picnic areas have grills that you may use. However, upon leaving the area, you are required to take your coals and embers with you. Leaving or dumping your oals/embers in the park is prohibited.
7) May I drive motorized vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles, in the park?
Motorized vehicles of any kind are only permitted in established parking lots and road ways. All-terrain vehicles or any other kind of motorized vehicles are prohibited on our trails and other areas within our parks.
8) May I bring alcohol into the parks?
All alcoholic beverages are prohibited on Fairfax County Park Authority property.
9) Do any of the parks have recycling centers?
Yes. The location of these centers often changes. For an updated list of parks with recycling centers, you may call The Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Collection and Recycling Division at 703-324-5040.
