Lawyers Road Park Master Plan Receives Board Approval

Plan Approval
At their regular meeting on April 26, 2006 the Park Authority Board approved the Master Plan for Lawyers Road Park¹(large file: 2.7MB).
Response to Public Input
Thank you to all who have participated in the extensive public process for planning this park that included a public information meeting¹ in May, 2005, a public planning workshop¹ in July, 2005, the public hearing¹ in January, 2006, and on-going dialog through e-mail and phone conversations with Park Authority staff and the Park Authority Board.
Seven speakers provided testimony at the public hearing for Lawyers Road Park on January 26, 2006. The issues identified by the speakers primarily related to the traffic impacts of the park on Lawyers Road and the pedestrian access from McDuff and McChesney Courts in the Glencannon subdivision.
The public comment record remained open for written comments through February 27, 2006. A total of eighteen comments were received between October and the closing of the public comment period. The written comments¹ largely focused on the same two issues of traffic impacts on Lawyers Road and pedestrian access.
The park master plan provides guidance on issues identified by the public to the extent that they relate to master planning. Some of the issues are not planning related and cannot be addressed within the context of a park master plan. Final resolution of many of the issues, including traffic safety, cannot be fully addressed until site design and engineering is funded and initiated.
Details of the Plan
The Lawyers Road Park master plan offers a balance between active and passive recreation opportunities to attract a wide-range of users. Proposed facilities include one picnic shelter, a creative play area, a trail loop with fitness cluster, one full-size rectangular field, and a 70 space parking lot. Almost half the site will be maintained for tree preservation.
Park Development
At this time, there is no source of funding for development of the park site. It is envisioned that funding would be provided through a future park bond initiative (post 2008) and/or through use of local proffered money.
