Park Authority Announces
Colvin Run Mill Historic Site Master Plan Process

The Fairfax County Park Authority held a public information meeting on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 to collect input on revising of the existing master plan for Colvin Run Mill Historic Site, located at 10017 Colvin Run Road, in Great Falls. The presentation from the meeting is available online. A summary of questions from meeting attendees and responses is also available for those unable to attend. Comments continue to be encouraged and can be sent via e-mail to: Parkmail.

Using the site data and public input from this meeting, a draft Master Plan Revision will be created. This draft will be presented for public review and comment at a public hearing anticipated to be held the summer of 2008.

The Park Site

Colvin Run Mill Historic Site is a 38-acre historic site in the Dranesville Supervisory District owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority. Since acquiring the original parcel in 1965 the Park Authority has restored the buildings and operates the site as a living history museum open to the public year round. Part of the park is located south of Route 7, offering natural habitat with natural surface trails. Park visitors should exercise caution while in this area of the site, as would be expected in any other natural environment with uneven terrain, thick vegetation, and wildlife.

The original park site was acquired in 1965 with a Master Plan approved in 1972. Colvin Run Mill Historic Site maintains and interprets features at the site for the enrichment of park visitors as they relate to the themes of technology and community in 19th century rural Northern Virginia.

The Process

The Colvin Run Mill Historic Site Master Plan Revision will seek to provide a balance between resource protection and interpretation, as well as issues identified by the public related to master planning this park. This process will take into account public access, site assets as well as constraints while evaluating alternatives to determine the best possible option. Ultimately, this process will lead to a revision of the master plan for Colvin Run Mill Historic Site. More information on the Master Plan process can be found by visiting the Park Planning and Development homepage.

The Future Park

Although park planning should be complete in 2008, no determination has been made as to when improvements will be implemented. Current park bond and Work Programs do not include funding for design or construction within Colvin Run Mill Historic Site. Site design, construction timing, and funding, are determined by the Park Authority Board through adoption of the Capital Improvement Program. In some cases, money proffered from other developments may be available to provide park improvements.
