Great Parks, Great Communities
GREAT PARKS, GREAT COMMUNITIES
2010-2020 COMPREHENSIVE PARK SYSTEM PLAN
Great Communities have Great Parks. With over 23,000 acres in 421 parks, the Fairfax County park system is well used and highly regarded. Parks are an essential element of life to residents of Fairfax County, about 80% of whom visit our parks each year to enjoy nature, historic sites, trails, sports, fitness, aquatics, programs, classes, events and so much more. Accredited and nationally recognized for excellence by the award of the prestigious Gold Medal for Parks and Recreation, Fairfax County's parks are ranked among the best in the nation.
This Great Parks, Great Communities Parks Comprehensive Park System Plan was adopted by the Park Authority Board in June 2011 following over four years of collaboration, creative thinking, and hard work by members of the public, Park Authority staff, and other County staff. The process and resulting plan addresses the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach to planning for park land acquisition, resource protection and meeting park needs through 2020.
The Plan consists of a Foreword and 15 chapters: a Countywide Chapter and 14 District Chapters, which use the same geography used in the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan. District-level plans provide existing district conditions information, a discussion of issues, and recommendations specific to each local park system. All chapters contain introductory information followed by recommendations organized by planning theme.
