Great Communities have Great Parks. With over 22,500 acres in 416 parks, the Fairfax County park system is well used and highly regarded. Parks are an essential element of life to residents of Fairfax County, about 80% of whom visit our parks each year to enjoy nature, historic sites, trails, sports, fitness, aquatics, programs, classes, events and so much more. Accredited and nationally recognized for excellence by the award of the prestigious Gold Medal for Parks and Recreation, Fairfax County's parks are ranked among the best in the nation.
After three years of collaboration, creative thinking, and hard work by members of the public, Park Authority staff, and other County staff, the Great Parks, Great Communities Parks Comprehensive Park System Plan was adopted by the Park Authority Board on June 22, 2011.
Following an almost four month long public comment period on the draft Plan this past fall, Park Authority staff compiled, catalogued, and responded to all public comments received. For those comments requiring further action, beyond the initial response provided, staff updated Plan text or forwarded comments on to the Park Authority division best suited to take further action.
A new Foreword and all fifteen chapters of the Great Parks, Great Communities Plan have been revised and are now available online. In addition, a catalog of public comments received is available for each Planning District chapter. Each catalog includes the comment received, a response, and an action taken (if any). Please also refer to the Countywide chapter comment catalog to see comments that apply to all Planning Districts.
Great communities truly have great parks.... Thank you to all those who continue to help us achieve both!
