Park Authority Announces Approval
of Kings Park Park Master Plan Revision

On March 25, 2009, the Fairfax County Park Authority Board voted to approve the Master Plan Revision for Kings Park Park. This culminates the revision process, which began with a public information meeting on March 13, 2008 to collect input on revising the master plan for Kings Park Park, located at 8717 Trafalgar Court in Springfield.  The newly approved Kings Park Park Master Plan Revision is available here.

The previous Master Plan for the park was approved in 1967. In 2006, the Park Authority acquired an adjacent one-acre tract that was formerly the site of the Royal Pool. The new Master Plan Revision updates the General Management Plan and Conceptual Development Plan for the park and determines future uses for the former pool site which has been added to the park. More information on the Master Plan process can be found by visiting the Park Planning and Development homepage.

Using site data and public input from a public workshop held on July 17, a draft Master Plan Revision was created for Kings Park Park. The Master Plan Revision incorporates the newly acquired former pool property, considers the community's recreational needs and concerns while providing for resource protection and interpretation. This process takes into account public access, site assets, and constraints while evaluating alternatives to determine the best possible option.

The draft Kings Park Park Master Plan Revision was presented at a public input meeting held on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 8:00 PM in Kings Park Elementary School. A summary of questions and the presentation from this meeting is posted on this website for those unable to attend. A hard copy of the draft master plan revision was also available for review from the Fairfax County Park Authority at the Herrity Building, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 406.

Comments on the plan were encouraged, and received by the Park Authority for 30 days after the public comment meeting. The public comment period closed on February 16, 2009. All comments had to be received by this date in order to be included in the official public record. Comments were also accepted at the meeting and by email to: Parkmail.

The Future Park

Currently the Park Authority intends to make additional playground upgrades in late 2009. Although park planning was complete in 2009, the current park bond does not include funding for design or construction beyond the above mentioned playground updates within Kings Park Park. Site design, construction timing, and funding are determined by the Park Authority Board through adoption of the Capital Improvement Program. In some cases, money proffered from other developments may be available to provide park improvements.

July Planning Workshop Held

Members of the Fairfax County Park Authority held a public park planning workshop for Kings Park Park on Thursday, July 17, 2008. The workshop presentation and a workshop summary are available for download.

The workshop was the second meeting in the Kings Park Park master plan revision process. The public input gathered at this workshop aided the Park Authority in determining future facilities and uses at the 9.2-acre Kings Park Park. In 2006, the Park Authority acquired an adjacent one-acre tract that was formerly the site of the Royal Pool. The purpose of the master plan revision is to update the General Management Plan and Conceptual Development Plan for the park and to consider future uses for the newly acquired tract.

At the workshop, the Park Authority presented several concept plan options for the community to consider in small group discussions. The Park Authority used the community input to draft the master plan revision for the park. The draft master plan revision will be presented at a public comment meeting planned to be held on January 15, 2009 at the Kings Park Elementary School.

Kings Park Park is a 9.2-acre local park surrounded on all four sides by single-family residences. The park is accessible by car from Trafalgar Court and Parkway Place and by foot from a trail leading to Cromwell Drive. The park has two parking lots, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, a playground, a small diamond ball field and a loop trail. The recently added one-acre tract has about ½ acre of open grassy area surrounded by woods (in 2007 the Park Authority removed all above-ground structures and filled in the pool area). The remaining areas of the park are forested with a perennial stream at the northern edge.

To kick-off the Kings Park Park planning process, the initial public information meeting was held on March 13, 2008. This meeting featured a presentation about the site's current conditions, possible future uses, and the park master planning process. The presentation was followed with a moderated question-and-answer session to identify community concerns as well as suggestions for future park features.
