Park Authority Board Approves Master Plan Revision for McLean Central Park

On November 13, 2013, the Fairfax County Park Authority Board voted to approve a revision to the McLean Central Park Master Plan. The vision for this park was developed with input from the community to identify the most desirable uses that would be appropriate for this site. When funding is appropriated, the plan revision allows for the addition of an outdoor fitness area, bocce court, trails, commemorative grove, visual enhancements, and an amphitheater with an accessible drop off. The amphitheater will be able to host a variety of performances, events, and community building experiences, expanding on and complementing the performances currently programmed in the gazebo. In conjunction with the adjacent Dolley Madison Library and McLean Community Center, McLean Central Park is uniquely positioned to serve as a public heart to the McLean community.

McLean has changed significantly since 1965 when the Park Authority first acquired land that would become McLean Central Park. It is appropriate that the master plan for McLean Central Park be updated from time to time to respond to the evolving community. The first master plan for McLean Central Park was developed in 1979 and revised in 2000 to address the planned expansion of the Dolley Madison Library and the significant growth of the McLean area. The 2013 revision focused on the addition of two acres of land at the corner of Dolley Madison Boulevard and Ingleside Avenue as well as strengthening the relationships between the park, the Dolley Madison Library, and the McLean Community Center.

With the master planning process complete, the Park Authority will move forward to seek a determination from the Fairfax County Planning Commission that the park is in conformance with the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan as well as to identify funding sources for future park development. The Park Authority extends its appreciation to those who took the time to share their vision for McLean Central Park, helping to shape a resource for the future.
