Park Authority Board Approved Three Mastenbrook Grants
On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, the Fairfax County Park Authority Board approved three Mastenbrook grants, a program which provides up to $20,000 in matching funds for individual volunteer projects in Fairfax County. These grants will enable three organizations including West Springfield Little League (WSLL), Chantilly Youth Association (CYA), and Fort Hunt Little League (FHLL) – to improve three different parks, Byron Avenue Park, Sully Highlands, and Hollin Hall Park, respectively.
Two out of three of the projects will be used to purchase and install baseball scoreboards. WSLL, FHLL will fund half of the costs for the athletic field scoreboards. Both organizations have been participants in the Adopt-A-Field program for several years and have contributed funds towards maintenance and multiple athletic field improvements at their affiliated parks as well as other park and school fields. The two organizations are dedicated to serving youngsters in youth baseball. These two projects are scheduled for completion at the end of July 2014.
CYA was awarded $20,000 by the Park Board for several park improvements at Sully Highlands including two batting cages, a fenced pitcher’s warm up area, a new playground, and picnic tables with concrete pads. The total project budget is projected to be $174,490.65 with CYA contributing $120,000. CYA has also been a participant in the Adopt-A-Field program for several years. The Sully Highlands projects are estimated to be completed in winter of 2014.
The late John Mastenbrook, a former Park Board Chairman and longtime member, established this program to encourage public/private ventures to improve county parks. Since 1999, more than 60 Mastenbrook grant projects have been completed. These projects include dog parks, playgrounds, greenhouses and a wide variety of other improvements.
