Sixth Annual Skatefest Returns to Wakefield Skate Park
The Fairfax County Park Authority is partnering with
the Fairfax Surf Shop (FSS) to celebrate national Go Skateboarding Day.
Skateboarders will roll into Wakefield
Skate Park on June 22 and 23, 2012 for the sixth annual
Skatefest for a weekend festival featuring competitions, charity, and
camaraderie. All competitions and other events are open to skaters of all
ages and ability levels. There will be food, music, games, free product
giveaways, and more than 12 skateboarding vendors. Spectators are welcome
and encouraged to attend. There will be plenty of fun for the whole
family.
The action begins on Friday, June 22 with a skate competition from 4 to 8 p.m. Categories include halfpipe jam, best trick, and park/street course. Skaters will compete in four age group brackets: 11 and under; 14 and under; 18 and under; and 19 and over. Participants must check in between 3 and 6 p.m. to register.
Skatefest resumes on Saturday, June 23 with a game of S.K.A.T.E. from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Beginner and advanced skaters will match trick for trick. If a trick is missed, the skater receives a letter. Once the word skate has been spelled, the skater is eliminated. Prizes for the top 3 in each division! Food and Skateboard vendors will at Skatefest all day.
Skaters of all ages can participate in SK8 For A Cause on Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. Skaters who have raised money for the Children’s National Medical Center ride a loop course. Prizes are also given out along the route to all participants. The top money raiser will win a scholarship to Camp Woodward, an action sports camp in Pennsylvania. Check in for SK8 For A Cause is at noon. The top five money raisers all receive a huge prize pack. Non-skaters have the chance to support Children's National by buying raffle tickets and bidding on silent auction items throughout the day.
Skaters compete again from 2 to 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in every age bracket for each competition category, totaling over $20,000 in giveaways. A team tryout for the FSS skate team is included in the contest. Select skaters may be chosen to join the team with full FSS sponsorship.
The registration fee for Skatefest Participants is $25 and if paid before June 22. The fee covers both the competition and SK8 For A Cause and includes an official event t-shirt. The fee is $30 on the day of the event. The event is free for spectators.
