Ceremony Planned for New Visitor Center at Sully Historic Site

Ceremony Planned for New Visitor Center at Sully Historic Site

A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the completion of a new visitor center at Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, Va., is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2014. The event starts at 2 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.

The new visitor center will welcome guests to the popular site as they arrive, allowing visitors to easily obtain information about the historic house and grounds. This building includes a larger space for museum gift shop merchandise, food and drink sales, restrooms, and a conference room for meetings.

Sully Historic Site Manager Carol McDonnell, enamored with the new facility said, “This modern building will be a wonderful asset for the Park Authority and the community, as a gathering place and easily accessible building as a point of orientation to the Sully historic core area.”

The installation of the pre-fabricated visitor center represents almost ten years of project planning and work. In July 2005, the Park Authority Board approved the Sully Historic Site Master Plan Revision. The Master Plan revision incorporated the reallocation of funds from the 2004 Park Bond which included a relocated park entrance road and a new location for the proposed visitor center east of the historic Sully house. However, the project was revised again in 2011 to include interior restrooms and an accessible brick sidewalk. To offset the funding for the revised plan, the Sully Foundation donated $11,460 and received a Mastenbrook grant in the amount of $10,000. The project was completed through the combined efforts of the Park Authority’s Mobile Crew and Southern Asphalt. The total construction cost was $713,000.

Sully Historic Site is located at 3650 Historic Sully Way in Chantilly, Va. For more information, call the Public Information Office at 703-324-8662.
