Public Meeting Set For Westgrove Park Master Plan
The Fairfax County Park Authority will begin the public planning process to develop a park master plan for Westgrove Park located at 6801 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria. A public information meeting will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Belle View Elementary School. The school is located at 6701 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria.
Westgrove is a 21.3-acre undeveloped park. The parcel was previously used as a sewage treatment plant. The property was transferred to the Park Authority in 2001. The Park Authority is now engaging in a public process to help determine the future uses and facilities within the park. An off-leash dog area has been proposed by a sponsoring group as an interim use to be sited on a disturbed portion of the site. The sponsor group has requested that this potential interim use be shown as a permanent feature on the master plan. Additionally, natural resource protection, interpretation and education areas have also been proposed for the site.
At the approaching meeting, staff will provide background information about the park, current site conditions and the specifics of how the Park Authority creates master plans. There will also be an opportunity for public comment and dialogue. We hope to identify community issues and concerns, to answer questions and to gather suggestions for future features and activities. More information about the park master planning process can be found online.
Public input will help shape the draft master plan. Once a draft plan is completed, the Park Authority will publish it for public review and comment. A second public comment meeting will be held later this year, followed by a 30-day comment period. Comments are welcome at the July 30 meeting or can be mailed to Project Manager Jay Rauschenbach, Planning & Development Division, Fairfax County Park Authority, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 421, Fairfax, VA 22035. Email comments can also be sent to Parkmail.
