Our Special Harbor Spray Ground Receives Best of Aquatics Award
The Fairfax County Park Authority is the recipient of the Best of Aquatics 2012 Best Spray Park award, recognizing Our Special Harbor spray ground located at the Lee District Park Family Recreation Area. This project was the result of a collaborative effort between the business community, private non-profit organizations, local government and individual contributors.
The annual Best of Aquatics awards are sponsored by Aquatics International, a leading industry publication devoted exclusively to the commercial and public swimming pool industries. The competition celebrates outstanding pools and waterparks which represent the industry’s finest, setting a benchmark for all other facilities.
Designed and built by the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund and operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority, Our Special Harbor spray ground is a zero water depth facility that serves as the focal point for a larger Family Recreation Area, including the accessible Tree House and Chessie’s Big Backyard playground funded by contributions to the Fairfax County Park Foundation. Funding for the spray ground was also provided by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities under the federal Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act. All promote barrier-free, natural inclusion opportunities accommodating individuals with disabilities. The facilities operate free of charge.
The award comes one year after the Park Authority was named the recipient of the Best of Aquatics 2011 Best Overall Commitment to Aquatics, an award which recognizes excellence in aquatics programs, facilities, operations and community involvement for large, multiple-facility systems.
Winners will be recognized in a special supplement to the November/December 2012 issue of Aquatics International and on the magazine’s website throughout the year.
