Weekend of Outdoor Activities Planned at Huntley Meadows

Dragonfly

Winter wildlife will be on full display during a weekend of nature programs at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, Va. Starting Friday, January 24, 2014 visitors are invited to look for and learn about owls, beavers, and woodpeckers. Dragonflies, popular summer residents, will be the focus of an indoor program and slideshow. Registration for these programs is available through Parktakes Online or by calling 703-222-4664.

Family Nature Night – Owls register
Come discover your natural neighborhood and reconnect your family with nature on Friday, January 24. Learn about owls through activities, crafts, games and a walk from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants must be at least age four. The cost is $7 per Fairfax County resident and $9 for visitors from elsewhere.

Flying Dragons register
Ever wonder how dragonflies can hover, dip, dive and zoom through the air at 40 mph? How many species live in Northern Virginia? What do they eat, who eats them, and what kind of courtship do they have? The answers are all bizarre and surprising and will be covered in a colorful PowerPoint presentation made up entirely of photos taken in Fairfax County to be held on Saturday, January 25 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The program concludes with a discussion about how to create the perfect dragonfly pond on your own property. Participants must be at least age 18. The cost is $6 for Fairfax County residents and $8 for visitors from elsewhere.

Evening Walk register
On Saturday, January 25, join Naturalist PJ Dunn on a rare opportunity to visit the wetland after dark. Listen for owls and watch for nocturnal animals such as beaver from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants must be at least age 18. The cost is $6 for county residents and $8 for others.

Drummers and Drillers register
As they drum and drill on trees, woodpeckers are ridding our yards and woodlands of ants, wasps, and grubs. On Sunday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, watch a variety of woodpeckers on the park's suet feeders, learn how to attract them to your yard, and maybe see a visiting yellow-bellied sapsucker. Participants must be at least age 18. The cost is $6 for Fairfax County residents and $8 for visitors from elsewhere.
