ECLP Offers New Program Line Up in 2014

E.C. Lawrence Winter Walk

In a park filled with history, there are new things taking place. Ellanor C. Lawrence Park (ECLP) in Chantilly, Va., is lining up a series of new programs for 2014. They present opportunities for you to spend time outdoors and to imagine the past in the very place where history happened.

The new programs get rolling this February with a Forest Treasure Campfire at 6 p.m. on February 7, 2014. Bundle up with the family and gather round crackling, fire-licked logs and learn how trees helped to build our nation, figuratively and literally. Come hungry. There will be s'mores.

Plan to look at how tough life was without YouTube, Facebook and Twitter and the critical life decisions folks who lived in the park had to make through the years. The program Hard Times, Difficult Choices will take place on March 2 and will also introduce you to Confederate cake and sweet potato coffee.

By mid-March, it’s warm enough to get out and get your hands dirty. Learn about soil organisms and the crucial role that invertebrates play in keeping forests healthy in the Life in the Leaf Litter program at 2 p.m. on March 15.

With spring critters shifting out of winter patterns, it’s a good time to kick off The Reptile and Amphibian Club (RAC) for kids ages 6 to 15 years old. Award-winning naturalist Hayley Ake guides them through a one-hour adventure with snakes, lizards, salamanders, turtles and frogs. RAC joins ECLP’s already-established Bird Watching Club as a regular, once-a-month gathering at the park.

Registration begins February 14 for ECLP’s first Wild Bird Spring Camp. Kids will be able to spend the week of April 14 through18 searching the park’s diverse habitats to discover and identify species that reside in the park. Naturalist Megan Tolosa will keep the week lively with her enthusiasm and her love of birds.
