Celebrate Springfield Days With A Party in the Park

Springfield Days
Springfield Days

The long-running annual community celebration Springfield Days kicks off Saturday, June 1, 2013 at South Run District Park with a full day of activities dubbed Party in the Park. Highlights include a pet parade, kids Olympics, farm animals, live entertainment, and an outdoor movie. Admission is free. It’s a full day of fun from morning until night at South Run District Park!

Pet owners won’t want to miss PetFest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Spectators and participants will enjoy seeing their beloved pets on display during Paws on Parade. The Fairfax County Police Department will demonstrate their dogs’ crime-fighting skills, and representatives from various animal rescue organizations and the Fairfax County Animal Shelter will be exhibiting. Peruse pet-related vendors’ tents and enjoy the pet agility demonstrations.

A party at a RECenter would be incomplete without a focus on fitness. RECenter staff will demonstrate the latest fitness trends and provide training opportunities throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Try Zumba or Tai Chi! Children are invited to participate in the kids Olympics, where they’ll compete in fun events such as soccer, Frisbee, and foot races. An awards ceremony will honor the winners.

If you like creepy crawlies and taking walks in the woods, OutdoorFest is the place to be from 4 to 8 p.m. Meet animals from Frying Pan Farm Park, play games, take guided nature walks, see live snakes, take an interpretive wagon ride ($3), and learn about Native American tools, cicadas, and Colonial history.

Cool off at an indoor pool party from 6 to 8 p.m. Then settle into your favorite lawn chair to watch the animated film Madagascar 3 on an outdoor movie screen. The film starts between 8:30 and 9 p.m.

Music and dancing will be performed onstage between fitness demonstrations. Food will be available for purchase from a variety of vendors. Event goers are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. For more information, call South Run RECenter at 703-866-0566. For a complete list of activities, visit www.springfielddays.com.
