Dairy Days at Sully are a Tasty Window to the Past

Dairy Days at Sully are a Tasty Window to the Past

Get a taste of 18th century life by making ice cream and butter the old-fashioned way at Dairy Days on select Fridays in July and August at Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, Va.  Children will get to churn butter, hand-crank ice cream, and play historic games.  Timed programs with online registration are offered at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. on July 11 and 25, 2014, as well as August 15, 22, and 29

Children five and up will churn their own butter and hand-crank their own ice cream, then enjoy the results.  There will also be historic games such as hoop and stick and the game of graces to enjoy, just as children of the 18th century did.

The cost is $5 per participant for Fairfax County residents and $7 for out of county residents; children must be accompanied by an adult.  Tours of the 1794 house and accompanying outbuildings are available for an extra cost.

Sully Historic Site is the 1794 home of Northern Virginia’s first congressman, Richard Bland Lee.  Until 1811, Sully was home to the Lee family as well as over 30 enslaved African-Americans.  Sully is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority as a historic house museum and includes extensive grounds and outbuildings.

Sully Historic Site is located at 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151, off Rt. 28 (Sully Road) ¼ mile north of Rt. 50 and 5 miles south of the Dulles Toll Road.
