Skateboarders to Compete at Wakefield SK8 Jam
NEW DATE: SATURDAY, JULY 28
Skateboarders from
around the region are invited to compete in the Wakefield SK8 Jam,
presented by the Fairfax County Park Authority and American Inline. On
Saturday, July 28, 2012, starting at 6 p.m., skaters will
battle for prizes and bragging rights as they show off their street
skating skills and proficiency on the half-pipe. The entry fee is $20 per
person.
Two age groups, 16 and under/16 and up, will compete in four contests including highest ollie, a game of S.K.A.T.E., the half-pipe jam, and a one-minute run. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each category.
- The highest ollie contest will be won by the skater who attains the greatest vertical distance by tapping the tail of the board as he/she jumps into the air, dragging the board upward with their front foot.
- In S.K.A.T.E., skaters perform a technical trick which another skater then attempts to duplicate. If the second skater fails to land the trick, he/she obtains a letter. Once SKATE has been spelled out, that skater loses. (This is identical to playing H.O.R.S.E. on a basketball court.)
- The half-pipe jam will test skaters¡¦ proficiency on transition as they work the coping, catch air, and show mastery of the ramp.
- The one-minute run winner will be awarded to the skater who presents the most impressive run in 60 seconds. Judges will look for technical skills, use of features such as ramps, rails, and ledges, and general excellence in riding ability.
This is a family-friendly event, and spectators are welcome.
Wakefield Skate Park is located at 8100 Braddock Road in Annandale, Va. For more information, call 703-321-7081, or visit online.
