Children’s Shopping Program Changed

Art Show

PLEASE NOTE: Children's Holiday Shopping and Cocoa Rides at Frying Pan for Sunday, Decmber 8 has been cancelled.

Colvin Run Mill Historic Site’s popular Children’s Holiday Shopping program is expanding. And it’s moving.

Due to changes at the mill, the annual Children’s Holiday Shopping program will now be three full days at the mill’s sister site, Frying Pan Farm Park.

This year’s program dates and times are Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, December 8 from noon to 4 p.m., and Monday, December 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Volunteers will be on hand to help children select and wrap holiday gifts for family and friends. For more information, please call Frying Pan at 703-437-9101.

Colvin Run Mill Historic Site will continue to host Santa Claus in the mill. He’ll be there on Saturday, December 14, and the park’s annual Holiday Train display in the barn will be on display over two full weekends, December 21 through 22 and December 28 through 29Colvin Run’s web page will have the most up-to-date calendar of events.

Why the changes? Back in 2008, the Fairfax County Park Authority revised the Colvin Run Mill Historic Site master plan after receiving community input at a public meeting. The revised master plan was approved by the Park Authority Board later that year. It includes construction of a modern visitor center that would house the site’s museum sales shop and the conversion of the General Store into a combined museum and learning center. The visitor center will be funded by park bonds approved by Fairfax County voters.

Until the visitor center is completed, the General Store will continue to serve as a multipurpose space selling tour tickets, grain products and select merchandise. Thanks to the help of site volunteers, the General Store will continue to be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays.
