Elegant Holiday Evening at Sully Historic Site
Join us for an elegant evening in the historic atmosphere of
Sully Historic Site
Sunday, December 9, 2012, from 5 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m.
See the 1794 home of northern Virginia’s first congressman, Richard Bland
Lee, in the glow of natural candlelight and get a glimpse of holiday
celebrations in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Take advantage of the rare opportunity to meander through the period rooms at your own pace as you encounter characters of the past. Learn how the Lees may have decorated the house with greens and see the dining room bursting with rich and tasty foods. Indulge in savory and sweet morsels from the buffet table and sample our non-alcoholic wassail punch.
Fiddler Michael McDonnell will entertain you with lively tunes, and Mike Bosworth may invite you to sing along with songs of the sea. Our silhouette cutter shows how to produce these treasured keepsakes, and you can try your luck at a game of whist.
During the evening, one of our historians will show you how to make a scrolled paper ornament to take home and deck your own halls.
A visit to the 1794 kitchen complements your holiday visit. From soup to dessert, you’ll learn the versatility of the open hearth and the labor it took to produce extravagant meals. Outside, Members of the 1st Virginia Regiment Revolutionary War reenactment group fire the Christmas guns - a common practice two hundred years ago.
Take a holiday photo on our antique sleigh, and imagine it as your mode of winter travel.
This program is for participants age 16 years old and older, and the cost is $20 per person. Prepaid reservations are required and space is limited. To register, visit Parktakes Online. For information, call 703-437-1794.
