Begin The New Year With Fun In The Parks


If you promised yourself you would spend more time in the parks in 2013, consider some of these entertaining options for the new year!

Hidden Oaks nature center Geology Rocks!
On Saturday, January 5, 2013 geology rocks! Discover fun facts about rocks, local earthquakes, the rock cycle and spend some time handling real fossils at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. Take a real fossil home with you. Enjoy a walk where you can see the effects of erosion and bedrock. This program is offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for children ages 6 to 12, and from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. for those 13 and older. The cost is $6 per person.

Ellanor C. Lawrence visitor center Icy Stories
January tends to be cold, but why not learn something about ice making in Fairfax County? Join the staff on Sunday, January 6 as they explore how ice was harvested and stored on Walney Farm in the 19th century. You’ll even have a chance to make and then eat ice cream. The program will be held at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park from 1 to 2:30 p.m. An adult must register with a child. The cost is $6 per person.

Sully Historic Site Junk In the Trunk
Household tools from 200 years ago often look similar to things we use today. Come see the junk in our trunk at Sully Historic Site and figure out what the artifacts are and how they were used and by whom. Participants will have a chance to play 18th century games, make a takehome craft and tour the first floor of the 1794 house. This one hour program on Saturday, January 12 is offered at 1 p.m. and again at 2 p.m. Participants must be at least age five. The cost is $6 per person.
