Martial Arts & Self-Defense

The renewed popularity of martial arts comes, in part, from increased awareness of the benefits derived from practicing this venerable form of activity. Training in martial arts gives you much more than self-defense skills.
The benefits include:
- increased strength and endurance
- improved muscle tone
- better agility, balance and coordination
- faster reaction time, greater self-esteem and self-control
Additionally, martial arts training provides the regular and vigorous exercise that helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, depression, mental fatigue, some forms of cancer and a host of other ailments.
For Martial Arts Classes:
- Participants may register through Fairfax County only once for classes at all Jhoon Rhee facilities.
- Testing, done on/off site for an additional fee, may be required for advancement to the next level of martial arts. Testing dates will be announced at the start of class.
- Uniforms are NOT required (except for Jhoon Rhee classes), but may be purchased through any source and are also available from the instructor for a separate fee. Since specific uniforms may be mandatory for testing/advancement in certain classes, it is recommended that you check with the instructor before buying.
- Separate fees may be charged for tournaments, protective gear and belts, if required for advancement.
- The Park Authority does not sponsor or facilitate rank advancement.
