In 2008, South Run expanded its fitness center to a beautiful two-story structure overlooking parkland. With our expanded cardio and strength training equipment, entertainment features and expansive views this 7,000 square foot facility is home to many satisfied members.
Other features include a spin and mind body studio, heated indoor pool (25 x 25 yards) with ramp access, two one-meter diving boards, beach/wading area, poolside spa, outdoor sundeck, family changing room and locker rooms with showers and saunas complete the natatorium.
In addition to the enlarged fitness space, the center's lower level has a racquetball/wallyball court plus two additional classrooms. The entry level includes three multi-purpose rooms, a lobby overlooking the pool and the top floor of the new fitness room.
The 182 acres surrounding South Run offer soccer and baseball/softball fields, two tennis courts, two outdoor basketball courts, a field house with newly installed athletic turf playing surface, accessible playground, and an off-leash dog area. Paved trails connect the RECenter with Burke Lake Park and Lake Mercer.

For Andy Sohn, a round of golf used to end with muscle aches. But these days, thanks to the Park Authority’s Golf Fit class at South Run RECenter, the occasional golfer now plays pain free.
“The class really does make a difference,” the government engineer said during a recent Golf Fit session. “When I started playing golf, I used muscles I didn’t realize existed. I come back from golfing now, and I don’t have to take Ibuprofen anymore.”
Golf Fit is a weekly, total-body conditioning class designed to improve a golfer’s strength, flexibility and balance; key attributes of a successful game.
Golf conditioning expert Laurie Strickland leads the classes with a variety of targeted stretching, core-strengthening and weight training exercises. The personal trainer, who is also an avid golfer herself, says most golfers who take the 10-week class see improvement in their game halfway through the session.
“The stronger you are, the more distance you can get on the ball,” she said. “Most golfers who take this class can hit the ball an average of 20 yards further after just a few weeks.”
The class made Eileen Ruzicka a believer. The retired federal government employee plays golf at least once a week, and she signed up for Golf Fit after she had knee surgery.
“It helped get the muscles back into shape, and the stability exercises have really helped with my swing,” she said. You’ll find avid golfers like Thomas Ortega in the class, too. The 19-year-old college student has played golf with his father for years, and he says Golf Fit enhances his game.“It’s good because it helps me stay in shape during the winter,” he said.
Strickland says you don’t have to be a golfer to take the class either. One student persuaded his wife, who is not a golfer, to take Golf Fit with him because he recognized that the total-body workout would benefit anyone, and the class was something they enjoyed doing together.
