EMPLOYMENT
The Water Mine and Lake Fairfax Park are now accepting
applications for the 2013 season.
The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole and Lake Fairfax Park are Fairfax County Government organizations. Employees at these parks are employed by Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) and are held to the highest standard of performance. The FCPA was awarded the 2012 and 2011 Best of Aquatics by Aquatics International and the 2010 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration.
The Water Mine and Lake Fairfax Park have many openings for positive,
energetic, motivated and friendly people.
All appointee's must successfully complete the background
investigation prior to employment.

Water Mine Lifeguard
No prior experience or certifications are required.
Training dates will be made available to applicants at the
time of their interview. Our lifeguards are licensed
through the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training
Program. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age at the start of the
course. The applicant is responsible for the course fee.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the Ellis &
Associates International Lifeguard Training Program.
Duties include:
- Ensure health and safety of guests by pool surveillance and enforcement of park policies
- Perform rescue and emergency care as needed (both in water and on land)
- Provide immediate first aid treatment to guests in distress as needed
- Maintain water and rescue skills at a "test ready" level at all times
- Participate in regularly scheduled mandatory in-service trainings for a minimumof 4 hours per month
- Provide exceptional customer service
- General cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool
- Maintain professional attitude and image at all times
Prerequisites for the lifeguard course:
- Swim 50 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
- Retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from a depth of 5 ft.
- Swim a minimum of 10 ft. underwater.
- Successfully get out of the pool at the pool’s edge without using a ladder, steps or ramp.

Water Mine Front Desk Staff (no longer accepting applications for 2013 season)
Front desk staff work in a fast paced environment while greeting our
guests with a smile.
Duties include:
- Process transactions for admission
- Provide general Water Mine and Lake Fairfax Park information to guests
- Inspect coolers for prohibited items
- Issue wristbands to guests
- Welcome groups and assist with their entrance
- Assist with weather related closings
- Help keep line traffic flowing
- Provide excellent customer service
- Performs general cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool during scheduled rounds
Water Mine Assistant Head Lifeguard (no longer accepting applications for 2013 season)
Assistant head guards assist the head guards and other lead aquatic
staff with many of their daily duties. Assistant head guards will
typically have 1-2 assistant head guard shifts per week, based on
performance, availability, and other factors. The rest of the
work-week for an assistant head guard will be spent performing
lifeguarding duties. These positions require a flexible
schedule which may include early morning or late evening hours.
In addition to lifeguarding duties, assistant headguard duties include:
- Assist with directing and supervising the lifeguard and park attendant staff in the performance of their duties
- Assist with completing and documenting water chemistry results and equipment inspections
- Assist with enforcing Ellis and Associates lifeguard standards
Water Mine Front Desk Supervisor (no longer accepting applications for 2013 season)
Under the supervision of the Front Desk Manager, front desk supervisors
lead and support the front desk team during their scheduled shift to
provide excellent customer service. Applicants must have a
minimum of one (1) operational season of guest relations/customer service
experience or equivalent experience. These positions require a
flexible schedule which may include early morning or late evening
hours.
Duties Include:
- Ensure compliance of all agency cash handling procedures are followed
- Supervise, organize, and guide front desk staff in the performance of their duties.
- Complete daily financial reports.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels at all times
- Assist with managing pool closures and other weather related closings
- Help keep line traffic flowing
- Provide excellent customer service, ensure a safe and efficient daily operation
Water Mine Front Desk Supervisor - Assistant Group Coordinator (no longer accepting applications for 2013 season)
The Assistant Group Coordinator will perform the duties outlined in the Front Desk Supervisor description above, and also perform the following duties:
- Assist with making group reservations, prepare and send group use contracts
- Respond to customer inquiries for group use, discounted group admissions, and birthday party reservations
- Welcome groups, review policies, and collect payments
Water Mine Front Desk Assistant Manager – Group Reservations Coordinator (position filled)
Under general supervision, and as part of a leadership team, assists with the daily operation of the front desk, with primary responsibilities being the management of group reservations, discount group admissions, and birthday party rentals.
Part time work may begin as early as February/March, continuing
through the preseason. Full time work (40 hours/week) may begin in
April/May and continue throughout the summer season. The park
closes for the season on Labor Day, and part time work may be needed up
until October or later to assist with winterizing the
facility.
Duties include:
- Maintain group reservation data base, log books for birthday party rentals and discounted group admission tickets
- Respond to customer inquiries via e-mail, telephone, and walk-in
- Administer group reservation contracts
- Responsible for collecting fees on site and billing of long term renters
- Welcome groups and process check-in and admission
- Provide excellent customer service
- Ensure all agency cash handling policies are met
- Train Assistant Group Coordinator
- Serve in Assistant Manager – Operations role, as scheduled
Water Mine Front Desk Assistant Manager – Operations Manager (position filled)
Under general supervision, assists in the daily operation of the front desk.
Part time work may begin as early as February/March, continuing
through the preseason. Full time work (40 hours/week) may begin in
April/May and continue throughout the summer season. The park
closes for the season on Labor Day, and part time work may be needed up
until October or later to assist with winterizing the
facility.
Duties include:
- Ensure that all agency cash handling guidelines are followed by staff
- Assist with hiring, orientating, and training of front desk staff
- Daily supervision of cashiers and line monitors
- As part of a leadership team, ensure the daily safe and efficient operation of the front desk
- Assist with meeting fiscal goals for the facility
- Provide excellent customer service
- Assist with scheduling employees
- Perform inventory of supplies and order as required
- Conduct and document daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of facility area and equipment and ensure issues are resolved
Water Mine Head Lifeguard (no longer accepting applications for 2013 season)
Head Lifeguards are in place to help the lifeguard and park attendant
staff perform at their best level. Applicants must hold a current Ellis
& Associate ILTP Lifeguard License and have at least one operational
season of experience in aquatic operations. These positions require a
flexible schedule which may include early morning or late evening
hours.
Duties include:
- With direction, supervise, organize, and guide lifeguard and park attendant staff in the performance of their duties
- Complete and document water chemistry results and equipment inspections
- Respond to customer service inquires
- Enforce and exceed Ellis and Associates lifeguard standards
- During lifeguard shortages, will be required to fill vacant shifts
Water Mine Waterpark Supervisor
Applicants must hold a current Ellis & Associate ILTP Lifeguard
License and have a minimum of two (2) operational seasons in aquatic
operations with progressive roles and/or leadership roles. These
positions require a flexible schedule which may include early morning or
late evening hours. Availability to start work in a part-time
capacity as early as February is preferred.
Duties include:
- Assist with recruiting, hiring, and training seasonal staff
- Organize and supervise the aquatic staff in the performance of their duties
- Maintain balanced pool water and filtration system
- Complete and process reports and inspections
- Enforce health department and Park Authority regulations
Water Mine Assistant Aquatics Manager
Open until filled. This is a seasonal position.
Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Manager, assists with the aquatic operations of the Water Mine. In the absence of the Aquatics Manager, assumes full responsibility and authority for the aquatics operations of the Water Mine with assistance from the Water Park Manager.
Shares responsibility for pool and waterpark operations including:
supervision of waterpark supervisors, head lifeguards, assistant head
lifeguards, and park attendants. Shares responsibility for in service
training, maintenance, balancing pool chemicals, lifeguarding, hiring and
training staff and evaluations of all staff.
Performs role of Manager on Duty when required, which oversees
the operation of the entire water park, to include aquatics staff and
front desk staff.
Part time work may begin as early as February/March, continuing through the preseason. Full time work (40 hours/week) may begin in April/May and continue throughout the summer season. The park closes for the season on Labor Day, and part time work may be needed up until October or later to assist with winterizing the facility.
Lake Fairfax Park Maintenance Supervisors and Workers
Park maintenance workers and supervisors report for duty and
work at Lake Fairfax Park. These positions are demanding yet rewarding
for both entry level job seekers and those looking for advancement
opportunities within Fairfax County. Candidates must possess the ability
to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather. These positions
are seasonal positions that are available from 25 to 48 weeks per year.
Working weekend and summer holidays is required and may be on a rotating
schedule depending upon staffing levels.
Duties include:
- General park maintenance
- Mowing and weed-eating operations
- Campground maintenance
- Athletic field maintenance
- Trail repairs and preservation
- General cleaning duties Routine manual labor tasks
Prerequisites for any maintenance position:
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical
- Successfully complete the background investigation
Lake Fairfax Main Office Custodian
These are seasonal positions. Working 5:00 to 9:30 pm. Weekend and
summer holiday work is required. Schedule may be on a rotating basis
depending upon staffing levels.
Duties include:
- Office and bathroom custodial duties
- Trash removal
- Light equipment repairs
Lake Fairfax Main Office
Office staff provides support to the administrative staff and general
service to park customers.
Duties include:
- Process Water Mine season pass sales
- Sell tickets for boat rentals and carousel rides
- Administrative duties (answering phones, filing, etc.)
- Check-in campground guests
- Process reservations
- Sell basic camping essentials
Lake Fairfax Marina Supervisor
Acts as facility supervisor on a given shift. Directs work of
subordinate employees and completes their tasks in their absence. One to
two years of marina operations experience is recommended.
- Assists in the operation of the marina & carousel
- Ensures an efficient and safe operation
- Observes facility to correct obvious problems
- Completes data tracking requirements and information logbooks
- Operates equipment such as motorboats, amusement ride, and trail vehicle
- Communicates with Park Management staff on the operation of facility
- Interacts with park visitors and provides services and information
- Renders first aid, seeks emergency services as needed
Lake Fairfax Boat House
The lake is our most beautiful attribute here at the park. Daily peddle
boat and canoe rentals are available. Boat house staff coordinate all
marina activity. Staff will receive training in CPR & Basic Water
Safety.
Duties include:
- Distribute life jackets to all patrons
- Ensure compliance with marina rules
- Safely operate our antique carousel
- Inspect boats and safety equipment
- Monitor lake activity for customer safety
- Provide emergency rescue care if needed
- Assist in emergency weather related closings
- Perform guided tours on lake
