The Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole is a Fairfax County Government organization. Employees at these parks are employed by Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) and are held to the highest standard of performance.

Over the years, the Water Mine has received many awards from Jeff Ellis and Associates Inc (E&A), International Aquatic Safety Consultants, for excelling in lifeguard professionalism, operational safety standards, and aquatic risk management through the participation in the E&A Comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program to include: Platinum in 2016; Gold in 2015, 2014, and 2013; and Silver in 2012, 2011, and 2010. The FCPA was awarded the 2012 and 2011 Best of Aquatics by Aquatics International and the 2010 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole staff received the Trailblazer Award for ‘Site of the Year’ in 2016 for their outstanding performance.

Seasonal Position Descriptions

LIFEGUARD
(160 positions, accepting applications all summer long)

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS ARE REQUIRED! You do not need to obtain a lifeguard certification before applying.  Our lifeguards are licensed through the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program and trained in-house. Training dates will be made available to applicants at the time of their interview.  Applicants must be at least 15 years of age at the start of the course.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program.  It is also possible to use your lifeguard license to transfer to an FCPA RECenter when the summer season is over.

Duties include:

  • Ensure health and safety of guests by pool surveillance and enforcement of park policies
  • Perform rescue and emergency care as needed (both in water and on land)
  • Provide immediate first aid treatment to guests in distress as needed
  • Maintain water and rescue skills at a "test ready" level at all times
  • Participate in regularly scheduled mandatory in-service trainings for a minimum of 4 hours per month
  • Provide exceptional customer service
  • General cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool
  • Maintain professional attitude and image at all times

Prerequisites for the lifeguard course:

  • Swim 50 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from a depth of 5 ft.
  • Swim a minimum of 10 ft. underwater
  • Successfully get out of the pool at the pool’s edge without using a ladder, steps or ramp

Additional prerequisite requirements may be recommended or required.

Lifeguard Scheduling:

BECAUSE THE LIFEGUARD STAFF IS SO LARGE, WE HAVE SET UP SCHEDULE TEMPLATES SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR SCHEDULE MIGHT LOOK LIKE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.  YOU CAN STILL SUBMIT TIME OFF REQUESTS, PENDING APPROVAL, BUT THESE SCHEDULE TEMPLATES SHOULD HELP YOU AND THE WATER MINE PLAN THE SUMMER BETTER.  TAKE A LOOK AT THE OPTIONS BELOW:

If none of the listed templates work entirely for your, don’t let it discourage you from applying.  Adjustments can be made on a case-by-case basis, or you can apply to be a part of the Gamma Company (30 positions available) in which your schedule is not as regular each week, and will consist of shifts that are left over from time-off requests that are assigned to you based on your approved availability.

Water Mine PARK ATTENDANT
(35 positions, open until filled)

Park Attendants work in a fast paced environment while greeting our guests with a smile. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by opening day.  First Aid and CPR/AED training is not required prior to applying, however, required training will be made available to you if hired.

Duties include:

  • Enforce all slide rules, slide and dispatch procedures and safety requirements
  • Clean and maintain areas such as the pool, locker rooms, splash park area, and surrounding areas
  • Monitor assist the flow of traffic through the admission line
  • Provide excellent customer service; greet, acknowledge, and interact with all customers
  • Ensure the health and safety of individuals in the park, locker rooms, splash park area, and surrounding areas through enforcement of park policies;
  • Participate in regularly scheduled mandatory in-service trainings to maintain certifications

CASHIER
(15 positions, open until filled)

Admissions team members work in a fast paced environment while greeting our guests with a smile.

Duties include:

  • Process transactions for admission
  • Provide general Water Mine and Lake Fairfax Park information to guests
  • Inspect coolers for prohibited items
  • Issue wristbands to guests
  • Welcome groups and assist with their entrance
  • Assist with weather related closings
  • Help keep line traffic flowing
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool during scheduled rounds

ADMISSIONS SUPERVISOR & ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR
Positions for 2017 have been filled.

Under the supervision of the Admissions Lead Supervisor and Reservations Supervisors, the Admissions Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors support the Admissions Cashiers and Park Attendants during their scheduled shift to provide excellent customer service.  They may also be assigned to assist with the daily reservations scheduled during their shift.  Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) operational season of guest relations/customer service experience or equivalent experience.  These positions require a flexible availability which may include a rotating schedule of weekdays, weekends, early morning, and late evening hours.

Duties Include:

  • Ensure compliance of all agency cash handling procedures are followed
  • Supervise, organize, and guide Admissions Cashiers in the performance of their duties
  • Close out and account for cash drawers.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels at all times
  • Assist with managing pool closures and other weather related closings
  • Help keep line traffic flowing
  • Provide excellent customer service, ensure a safe and efficient daily operation
  • Maintain professional attitude and image at all times
  • Assist with reservations check-in, payments, and related inquiries

RESERVATIONS SUPERVISOR

The Admissions Reservations Supervisor will perform the duties outlined in the Admissions Supervisor description above, and also perform the following duties:

  • Respond to customer inquiries via e-mail, telephone and walk-in
  • Assist with administrating reservations and sending contracts
  • Assist in maintaining log books and rental calendars
  • Welcome groups, review policies, and collect payments
  • Responsible for invoicing long term renters

ADMISSIONS LEAD SUPERVISOR
(2 positions, open until filled)

Under the supervision of the Admissions Director and the Assistant Admissions Director, Admissions Lead Supervisors are responsible for overseeing all daily operations of admission including admissions supervisors, assistant admissions supervisors, cashiers, park attendants, and other areas as required. Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) operational seasons of guest relations/customer service experience or equivalent experience; and one (1) operational season of management experience. These positions require a flexible availability which may include a rotating schedule of weekdays, weekends, early morning, and late evening hours.
Duties Include:

  • Ensure compliance of all agency cash handling procedures are followed
  • Supervise, organize, and guide Admissions Staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Complete daily financial reports.
  • Ensure completion of opening and closing duties
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels at all times
  • Counsel and correct poor performance and behaviors
  • Enforce disciplinary action when necessary
  • Coordinate with aquatic staff to insure smooth operations overall
  • Assist with managing pool closures and other weather related closings
  • Help keep line traffic flowing
  • Provide excellent customer service, ensure a safe and efficient daily operation
  • Maintain professional attitude and image at all times

POOL SUPERVISOR & ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR
(6 and 12 positions respectively, open until filled)
Positions for 2017 have been filled.

Under the direction and supervision of the Duty Manager, the Pool Supervisor is responsible for assisting with managing the daily aquatic operations of The Water Mine.  Applicants must hold a current Ellis & Associate ILTP Lifeguard License and have a minimum of: two (Supervisor) or one (Asst. Sup.) operational season(s) in aquatics with progressive roles and/or leadership roles. These positions require a flexible availability which may include a rotating schedule of weekdays, weekends, early morning, and late evening hours.
 Duties include:

  • Organizes, directs and guides lifeguards and park attendants in the performance of their duties
  • Create and manage staff rotation, making adjustments to respond to changes
  • Enforce park rules and policies, apply safety standards, standard operating procedures, and disseminate pertinent information to guests
  • Conduct and document daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of the facility and equipment
  • Conduct spot checks on staff members; conduct Vigilance Awareness Training (VAT) and other training
  • Maintains proper pool water chemistry. Notifies Duty Manager of variations from established ranges
  • Troubleshoot pool operational issues that arise
  • Performing lifeguarding duties as required
