The Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole is a Fairfax County Government organization. Employees at these parks are employed by Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) and are held to the highest standard of performance. The FCPA was awarded the 2012 and 2011 Best of Aquatics by Aquatics International and the 2010 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration.

The Water Mine has many positions for positive, energetic, motivated and friendly people. All appointee's must successfully complete the background investigation prior to employment.

Seasonal Position Descriptions

Water Mine Lifeguard
(150 positions, accepting applications all summer long)

No prior experience or certifications are required.  Training dates will be made available to applicants at the time of their interview.  Our lifeguards are licensed through the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age at the start of the course. The applicant is responsible for the course fee.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program.
Duties include:

  • Ensure health and safety of guests by pool surveillance and enforcement of park policies
  • Perform rescue and emergency care as needed (both in water and on land)
  • Provide immediate first aid treatment to guests in distress as needed
  • Maintain water and rescue skills at a "test ready" level at all times
  • Participate in regularly scheduled mandatory in-service trainings for a minimum of 4 hours per month
  • Provide exceptional customer service
  • General cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool
  • Maintain professional attitude and image at all times

Prerequisites for the lifeguard course:

  • Swim 50 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from a depth of 5 ft.
  • Swim a minimum of 10 ft. underwater.
  • Successfully get out of the pool at the pool’s edge without using a ladder, steps or ramp.
  • **Additional prerequisite requirements may be recommended or required.

Water Mine Admissions Team Member
(30 positions, accepting applications all summer long)

Admissions team members work in a fast paced environment while greeting our guests with a smile.
Duties include:

  • Process transactions for admission
  • Provide general Water Mine and Lake Fairfax Park information to guests
  • Inspect coolers for prohibited items
  • Issue wristbands to guests
  • Welcome groups and assist with their entrance
  • Assist with weather related closings
  • Help keep line traffic flowing
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance duties to include locker rooms, grounds, and pool during scheduled rounds

Water Mine Admissions Supervisor
(6 positions)

Under the supervision of the Admissions Manager, Admissions Supervisors lead and support the Admissions Team during their scheduled shift to provide excellent customer service.   Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) operational season of guest relations/customer service experience or equivalent experience.  These positions require a flexible schedule which may include early morning or late evening hours.
Duties Include:

  • Ensure compliance of all agency cash handling procedures are followed
  • Supervise, organize, and guide Admissions Staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Complete daily financial reports.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels at all times
  • Assist with managing pool closures and other weather related closings
  • Help keep line traffic flowing
  • Provide excellent customer service, ensure a safe and efficient daily operation

Water Mine Admissions Supervisor - Assistant Group Coordinator

The Assistant Group Coordinator will perform the duties outlined in the Admissions Supervisor description above, and also perform the following duties:

  • Assist with making group reservations, prepare and send group use contracts
  • Respond to customer inquiries for group use, discounted group admissions, and birthday party reservations
  • Welcome groups, review policies, and collect payments

Water Mine Pool Supervisor

Under the direction and supervision of the Duty Manager, the Pool Supervisor is responsible for assisting with managing the daily aquatic operations of The Water Mine. Applicants must hold a current Ellis & Associate ILTP Lifeguard License and have a minimum of two (2) operational seasons in aquatic operations with progressive roles and/or leadership roles. These positions require a flexible schedule which may include early morning or late evening hours.

Duties include:

  • Organizes, directs and guides lifeguards in the performance of their duties
  • Create and manage staff rotation, making adjustments to respond to changes
  • Enforce park rules and policies, apply safety standards, standard operating procedures, and disseminate pertinent information to guests
  • Conduct and document daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of the facility and equipment
  • Conduct spot checks on staff members; conduct Vigilance Awareness Training (VAT) and other training
  • Maintains proper pool water chemistry. Notifies Duty Manager of variations from established ranges
  • Troubleshoot pool operational issues that arise
  • Performing duties of Assistant Pool Supervisor, and/or lifeguard as necessary

Water Mine Duty Manager

Under the direction and supervision of the Director and Management Team, Duty Managers are responsible for assisting with managing the daily operations of the entire Water Mine facility, including the pool, admissions, reservations, and other areas as required. A minimum of three (3) operational seasons or two (2) years working at a public facility (such as a park, community center, retail, or food service) with progressive roles and leadership roles. Prior training or certifications in lifeguard training, first aid, CPR, and pool operations are not required prior to application. Once appointed to the position, the employee must obtain CPR/First Aid Training, Pool Operator permit within 30 days of hire.

Duties include:

  • When scheduled, is manager on duty on given shift
  • Performs duties related to the daily operation of the various facilities within the park. 
  • Reports problems and takes necessary action
  • Completes activities including opening and/or closing of park facilities, operated equipment such as park truck, trail vehicles, and personal computer
  • Performs duties such as cash register ring-outs, counts safe money, and change funds
  • Completes deposits and delivers money to bank.  Makes daily entries in logbooks
  • With full time management staff, trains seasonal employees as needed to ensure they complete their assigned work
  • Directs work of subordinate employees and completes their tasks in their absence
