Come to Riverbend Park to experience nature and history based field trips. Our field trips offer hands on, outdoor experiences to supplement your curriculum. Each field trip corresponds with Virginia Science and/or Social Studies SOL's.

Active Ways to Explore the Outdoors with Your Family
The Potomac River Gorge Trail - A Globally Rare
(8 yrs. and up), daily 7am-dusk, Riverbend Picnic area by the Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Enjoy a self-guided 2-mile hike along the Potomac River and find why The Nature Conservancy named the area "one of the most significant natural areas in the eastern United States." Fourteen trail stops reveal secrets of the Potomac River Gorge. The trail begins in the Riverbend picnic area and ends at Great Falls Park. FREE
Paddle the scenic and serene Potomac River in a kayak. The park offers a number of kayak tours (June-September) on a variety of topics. Most of our tours are designed for beginners. These are not whitewater tours. Introduce yourself to the world of kayaking, get some exercise and most of all enjoy the natural beauty of the river and wildlife. All of our instructors are certified with the American Canoe Association. Let your adventure begin here.
Fishing Rod/Reel Rentals
Riverbend Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Don't have a fishing rod? We can rent you what you need to fish at the park. Our rod/reel combinations are perfect for beginners and children. We supply you with a rod/reel rigged with line and tackle to get you started. Our visitor center also sells fishing tackle. Rentals are available 9am-4pm weekdays, except Tuesdays, and noon-4pm on weekends and holidays. All rods must be returned by 5pm. Cost per rental is $6 (maximum two hours). A valid driver's license is required. A Virginia or Maryland freshwater fishing license is required for persons 16 years or older to fish. Go online to State of Virginia and get your license instantly. Reservations recommended due to limited availability.
Boat, Canoe and Kayak Rentals
Jon boat, canoe and kayak rentals at Riverbend Park: May 20 through October 14, 2016.
2016 Boating Hours are Friday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and holidays May through October.

Jon boats (must be 16 yrs. to rent) are available for families, anglers, and anyone who wants to enjoy time on the river.
Half Day Rental - one person kayak or jon boat (up to 3 hours) =
Half Day Rental - two person kayak (up to 3 hours) = $25
All Day Rental - one person kayak or jon boat (3-6 hours) = $25
All Day Rental - two person kayak (3-6 hours) = $35
All boaters are advised to go upriver from the boat launch area to avoid the Aqueduct Dam which is located one mile down river. No boating is allowed past buoys down river. All rentals closed in hazardous conditions.
Exercise and Art
Riverbend Park offers low-impact exercise classes and art classes in the beautiful natural setting of the park.Get fit while enjoying natures changes during the seasons. Our Calendar of Events has details on current offerings.
Virginia Indian Festival

This exploration of the history and lives of Virginia's First Families includes many hands-on activities. Enjoy traditional dancing featuring the Rappahannocks.
Fabulous Fun at Riverbend Park
Rent a rod from us or bring your own. We sell live and artificial bait. Fish from the river bank or by jon boat. Most commonly caught fish are sunfish and smallmouth bass. Fishing license required for those 16 yrs. and older. Go online to State of Virginia and get your license instantly. Fishing rods and bait available from 9am-3pm.
Row on the Potomac
Rent a jon boat and enjoy this tranquil section of the Potomac River. Explore islands, fish or drop anchor and relax. Canoes and Kayaks are also available. Boat rentals available from 9am-5:00pm Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Monday Holidays. Boating closed when river is high.
Would you prefer a guided fishing trip?
Go with a Riverbend Park Naturalist on a two-hour boat trip in search of smallmouth bass and sunfish. Reservations and advanced payment required. $125
Have a picnic
Enjoy the riverside picnic area with grills or relax on the deck overlooking the Potomac River. Grills provided, bring charcoal and matches. Snacks, ice cream and drinks available for purchase.
Take a hike
Tucked away in a remote river setting, Riverbend Park has 418 acres of forest, meadows and ponds. The 10+ miles of trails include a 2.5 mile portion of the Potomac Heritage Trail linking Great Falls National Park and regional parkland.
Take in the new exhibits! Visit with native animals, touch rocks from an ancient floor, and view Native American artifacts found in the park. Don't forget to check out our trading post-styled shop, with nature themed gifts, live and artificial bait, and snacks, drinks and ice cream. Open 9am-5pm weekdays, 12-5pm weekends and holidays (9am-5pm boat rental days), closed Tuesdays.
Play a game!
Volleyball (net and ball), corn hole, and sports bag are available for rent daily. Seasonal scavenger hunts are available at $1/each.
