Wakefield Skate Park: A brief historyWakefield Skate Park is the Fairfax County Park Authority's first skate park. It is located next to Audrey Moore Recenter in Wakefield Park. The architectural firm of Burgess & Niple Inc. designed the course layout after several meetings with skaters and BMX riders. The contractor, Tan-Kat Corporation are responsible for clearing the land, laying the concrete pad, lighting, fencing, and attendant building pad. On September 29, 2003 Triple "J" Construction Inc was awarded the Elements Contract, and American Ramp Company of Joplin, MO was named the Elements Subcontractor. They are responsible for building the ramps and grind rails. Wakefield Skate Park officially broke ground September 8, 2003. This began the first of three construction phases of the facility. Phase one, which opened on April 24, 2004 included ramps, inclines, and grind rails. Phase two was a Vert Ramp located to the right of phase one when seen from the parking lot. Phase three was a concrete bowl located behind phase one when seen from the parking lot.
Since local skaters played an important role in making the Park Authority aware of the need for a skate park, as well as helping out in the design phase, it seemed fitting to have a contest to design Wakefield Skate Park's logo. Eighteen Fairfax County artists submitted a total of 82 designs! Entrants ranged in age from four to 18 years old. Entries included sketches, black and whites, colored pictures, and graphic art concepts. The judges had a tough job, but finally selected a drawing submitted by Nate Cherry, a 12 year old student at Kent Gardens Elementary School.
